The New York Yankees are planning to host events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in 2019, a significant move from one of only two MLB teams that does not host an annual LGBTQ Pride Night.
Major league sources told local outlet SportsNet New York that the team will host unspecified events commemorating the Stonewall Riots because of their significance to New York's LGBTQ community.
The 1969 riots started when members of the gay community, led by trans activists, pushed back against policemen raiding the historically gay area around the Stonewall Inn. Many attribute the riots with inciting the modern LGBTQ movement.
The Yankees earlier this year faced pushback for being one of the last Major League teams that does not host an LGBTQ pride event. ... The other holdout, the New York Mets, hosted a Pride event this year after facing criticism. ... SportsNet reported Yankees have not finalized details about the events but they will likely be hosted inside and outside of the ballpark.
