A man who raped his wife’s 14-year-old sister has been given a suspended jail sentence after a judge ruled that imprisonment would impose extreme hardship on the rapist’s family.

2. Don't they have any respite care and services for autism over that way?

There are so many holes in this story, pieces that are missing. It looks like the victim waited 20 some odd years to come forward, and she probably needs and has not gotten some social services, like PTSD counselling and treatment.

The excuse for suspending his sentence is that the autistic children need care that the father provides.

Haven't they heard of ankle bracelets over there? He could do his duty to his children and not be left free to roam and molest others...?

The ankle bracelet did what it was supposed to do--the police didn't.

The monitoring company said they were getting short interruptions when the things were bumped against objects, so they didn't notify police.

As a result, he stole a car, murdered a woman, and raped her 10 year old daughter.

They just need to keep predators locked up.

If they hadn't done that, and instead "answered all calls," we wouldn't be having this discussion.

The "lock 'em up" question is a separate debate. If the police had not told the alarm company to not notify them for short interruptions, and instead, investigated every single one, that crime would not have happened.

The police are trying to shift this to the alarm company, for doing what they TOLD them to do.

Investigating every bathtub bump is the price of running an ankle bracelet program...perhaps they should have issued each convict a few sheets of bubble wrap or foam, and a bungee cord or even a roll of tape, to put around the ankle bracelet, for use when the perpetrators were in the tub to avoid those sharp bumps?

Makes more sense to me than abdicating responsibility for their prisoners.

8. The judge considered that the rapist "self-rehabilitated" whatever that means.

How did the judge determine that? Just because no other rape victims have come forward the judge assumes it's all in the past?

I understand wanting to consider the children's needs but if that's the basis for determining sentencing there must be very few parents in Irish gaols.

9. I still like the idea of an ankle bracelet.

Why should this guy sit on his ass singing and watching tee vee, getting three squares a day, and griping to the EU anytime his cell is too hot or cold, or his blanket too scratchy?

Make him stay home and take care of those kids--but make him STAY HOME. Hell, for extra security, put an invisible fence around the property and hook him up with one of those cute (locked up tight) collars set to "stun."

If it's good enough for Fido, it's good enough for him.

I'm not really big on long prison terms but this sentence just sounds like a slap in the face of his victim.
