Why Mary Tyler Moore mattered to me

I watched The Mary Tyler Moore Show from the first to the last episode. Loved her and loved the cast and loved the show.

But in retrospect, I owe my lifestyle choices to MTM. She made it more than acceptable, but cool, to live as a single woman. No husband, no boyfriend. An interesting job with interesting coworkers and a decent boss. A social life on her own terms. She even had credit!

The MTM Show was on CBS on Saturday nights. Many of my friends were on dates at that time. I preferred staying home to watch the show.

Mary Richards was in no way Laura Petrie. This was a woman I could understand completely and who became my role model.

She wasn't an outright feminist but you knew that she was. MTM went on to produce other TV shows under her name and I loved her for that too.

Today, I feel like I've lost an old friend.

My offerings: Part 1 and 2 of the Final Show and of course, the closing credits

and she was just great.

And yes, a woman who cared about women, we sure could use more of them right now.
