Olive oil compound kills cancer cells in minutes

An ingredient in extra-virgin olive oil kills a variety of human cancer cells without harming healthy ones.

Scientists knew that oleocanthal killed some cancer cells, but weren’t really sure how. They thought the compound might be targeting a key protein in cancer cells that triggers a programmed cell death, known as apoptosis, and decided to test their hypothesis.

“We needed to determine if oleocanthal was targeting that protein and causing the cells to die,” says Paul Breslin, professor of nutritional sciences in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers and coauthor of a new study published in Molecular and Cellular Oncology.

DEAD IN 30 MINUTES
After applying oleocanthal to the cancer cells, the researchers discovered that the cancer cells were dying very quickly—within 30 minutes to an hour. Programmed cell death takes between 16 and 24 hours, so the scientists realized that something else had to be causing the cancer cells to break down and die.

They discovered that the cancer cells were being killed by their own enzymes. The oleocanthal was puncturing the vesicles inside the cancer cells that store the cell’s waste—the cell’s “dumpster,” or “recycling center.”

does nasty things. Lots of things like berries and avocados, especially, help cancer immunity. Then there is the gluten subject now and how it MAY accentuate colon problems/blood sugar/diabetic sensitivity and ultimately cancer...so many modern things we have to ferret out for ourselves.

Cancer is awful, and anything that might someday be used to treat it is a good thing.

I'd gladly swig a bit of olive oil every day, if that would protect me from cancer.

And they attributed that healthiness to the olive oil in their diet. Whether there's any truth to that, I don't know, but I've switched over to Italian dressing whenever it's a choice.

The lab testing applied the olive oil ingredient, oleocanthal, directly to cancerous cells, which caused the cancer cells to burst and die. They haven't done animal testing yet, so it's not known how the substance should be administered, or even if it works in real life. But if it does work, it may need to be administered intravenously to directly attack the cancer cells.

The love of my life is undergoing a grueling course of chemotherapy and radiation, without any real assurance that it will work. I wish this substance was further along in testing.

I hope and pray they can come up with something to help people. I've been through cancer with my mother and it is rough. I hope for the best for you both as it's hard on everyone involved.

Eating healthily is an accumulated art...there is no panacea, but the combination of elements is as complex as the body itself.

Because if it isn't selective, it's basically following the same path as other chemotherapy drugs: take it and pray to God the cancer is killed off before the rest of your body's healthy cells are.
