SC teen dies after drinking large diet soda, latte, energy drink, coroner says

Davis Allen Cripe died after collapsing at school

Updated: 1:52 PM EDT May 15, 2017

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Caffeine caused the death of a 16-year-old student, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Watts held a news conference Monday to discuss the results of an investigation into the death of Davis Allen Cripe, who died April 26 at Palmetto Health Parkridge Hospital after collapsing in a classroom.

Watts said Cripe drank a large diet Mountain Dew, a cafe latte from McDonald's and an energy drink in the two-hour period before he collapsed.

"We lost Davis from a totally legal substance," Watts said. He said he determined Cripe died from a caffeine-induced cardiac event.

"It was so much caffeine at the time of his death, that it caused his arrhythmia," he said.

although death is extremely rare. Most people will just experience a fast heart rate and unpleasant light headedness, possibly with nausea and sweating.

The five espresso shots might seem like a great idea if you've got an exceptionally busy day, but unless you're a serious coffee hound who drinks a lot of the stuff ordinarily, don't do it.

I have a feeling this kid might have been headed for sudden cardiac death, something we've seen with quite a few promising young male athletes. Mountain Dew, coffee, and an enegy drink got him first.

I have it and it can only be detected by an EKG post-puberty...

My cardiologist told me at the time we discovered it "Well, I know you didn't do any Cocaine in College"...(she had gone to the same University as me and knew there had been a lot of coke around)....I asked her how she knew and she said "because you would be dead".

Loading up on Caffeine can have the same deadly effect as Cocaine on anyone who has WPW...

I thought I was having a heart attack. I see people drinking them all the time. Once was enough for me. I will drink a small latte if I need a boost.

That is totally gross he drank a poisonous diet Mountain Dew though. Disgusting just thinking about drinking that sludge.
