Maybe the cat litter would seem enough like what your dog uses outside. And you could sprinkle a little soil into it, at least at first.

in a small room like the bathroom. I put an Astro Turf doormat on top of the puppy pad when I first trained my dog since it looked like grass and was easy to rinse off. It worked really well. When she got older and I would have to leave her for a long time I would do this system again and she remembered what to do. Also, TONS of praise and a treat never hurts!
