Which drink is best for hydration? Hint: It isn't water

Which drink is best for hydration? Hint: It isn't water

The other factor affecting how well a beverage hydrates relates to a drink's nutrient composition. For example, milk was found to be even more hydrating than plain water because it contains the sugar lactose, some protein and some fat, all of which help to slow the emptying of fluid from the stomach and keep hydration happening over a longer period of time.
Milk also has sodium, which acts like a sponge and holds onto water in the body and results in less urine produced.

The same can be said for oral rehydration solutions that are used to treat diarrhea. Those contain small amounts of sugar, as well as sodium and potassium, which can also help promote water retention in the body.
The most hydrating beverages, ranked

The research team at St. Andrews University tested 13 common beverages to see how they impact hydration. Here's what they found, ranked from most hydrating over a four-hour period to least.
Skim milk
Oral rehydration solutions (like Pedialyte or Liquid I.V.)
Full fat milk
Orange juice
Cola
Diet Cola
Cold tea
Tea
Sports drink
Still water
Sparkling water
Lager
Coffee

1. No wonder I am always thirsty...

My top choices are the bottom two of the list!

2. The Colas need at least one more category

That would be the “Hecho en Mexico” category. Mexicans still use cane sugar in their drinks as opposed to the corn syrup mix of Estados Unidos.

Who knew milk would top this list?

4. fascinating, i've always felt that soda was more thirst-quenching than water

even though everyone insisted that nothing was better than water at quenching thirst.

logic says sure, but personal experience says otherwise.

i'm not saying that soda is healthier; it's not. just saying that it makes then sensation of thirst go away more effectively than water.

i've also noticed that orange juice works really well.

i wonder how soy milk compares to cow's milk as i don't drink cow's milk anymore.

5. well, i'm glad beer made the list.

i usually like a heavier, hoppier beer, but in my house lagers have always been in the category of "lawn mower beer".

skim milk is a good one, which was kind my go to- been parched in the sun, need something cold.
but because i eat shitty, mostly, i switched organic whole milk.

6. I drink up to a 1/2 gallon

of herbal ice tea every day. Doc says if I keep it up, no more kidney stones.

7. My lab test

It comes down to the difference between thirst and hydration. I'll accept their importance of nutrients in liquids, but when I'm thirsty, milk is last on my list.

8. that is interesting and mostly contradictory to everything I "know"

the thought of drinking milk when I am hot and thirsty makes me gag. fresh squeezed OJ or regular with a lot of ice is ok, but in general wouldn't be my first choice either. on the other hand I learned as a kid not to start drinking water until I was really thirsty or I would just want more and more so I am not one of those people that carries a water bottle around everywhere. I can go most of the day without, then chug a gallon. (or my usual, lightly sugared iced tea).
