Anyone know anything about ergonomic desk chairs?

It's not that I'm having any specific back problems right now, other than a little sciatic nerve discomfort. I really just need a new chair.

I haven't had one of these since the 80's, but I like the idea and the look. About $80.

I don't want yet another cheap Chinese pleather chair. I hate them.

Is there any other style I should look at?

The Aeron Chair is my favorite but it can be a bit pricey. I like the fact it keeps your back and bottom cool while providing good lumbar support. If you are on a budget, there are some used available on Craigslist.

Pricey at around $600

Long term, I wonder whether the fabric seat would give out sooner than expected. Fabric weave for the back makes perfect sense. Not sure about the seat.

I bought my aeron at a good price. It's amazing how resilient it is. It can really handle any amount of abuse I throw at it. It really is worth the investment. I never have any back pains.

I like them, but they don't really help your posture. I still hunch over, like while I'm typing.

my green!

Are they comfortable otherwise? Do you feel as though they strengthen your core and keep the blood flowing?

9. Oh I totally recommend them, but probably not for all day sitting.

I can see the core results in my abs. I don't exercise much otherwise.

If you concentrate you can maintain good posture on a ball.

3. Maybe you can find a used high end office chair, Knoll, Krueger, etc.

(I'm familiar with those odd kneeling chairs but have never seen one in use or tried to use one.)

I have a few Knoll Equa chairs, all the rage in 1985, no longer their top chair:

They now offer the Aeron or Chadwick:

On eBay or maybe locally you might find a good Knoll ergonomically correct chair for under $100 used.

and my knees won't take that sit/kneel chair any more.

What I ended up with is a moderately priced rolling office chair with a solid back up to my shoulders. I have pillows of various sizes and shapes and when my back is giving me fits, I tape them into position to relieve as much strain as possible.

It's tacky but it works.

desk chair for short people with short legs? Most chairs are too high for my feet to touch the floor, and the seats are so deep i can't use the back rest.

13. I REALLY like my eurotech

I had finally gotten sick of all the office depot crap breaking on me, and went to a higher end office store expecting to buy a Herman Miller or similar.

The salesman eventually talked me into a Eurotech (http://www.eurotechseating.com/seating.html) which has been great. It also has a lifetime warranty on parts and labor except the upholstery (5 years for that).

Its been a great chair, I've had it now for 4-5 years, and its been great. I had a problem with one of the mechanisms, and the guy was out there the next morning with parts and fixed it, no questions.

The problem with the stuff they sell at places like office depot is that the cushion is of low quality and flattens out after a few months. I could not afford the high end stuff but I found a place that sells used high end furniture and got a deal.

15. I've had a few

Two separate ones died within a year or two. The third one I bought the base and chair literally separated -- twice while I was sitting on it. The first time (to their credit) they replaced the entire mechanism, the second time I replaced it. I'm not a small guy (about 225), but that made my decision for me.

As for the cushion, yea it lasted maybe 6 months or so.

Used is a good way to go as well, but the prices at the used stores were 70-80% of what I got mine for, so it didn't seem worth it.

16. Well, I fixed my chinese desk chair over the weekend

I reupholstered the seat, took everything apart and greased all the squeaky areas, made a modification to the seat-back connection point and added some sound deadening material (foil lined bubble wrap, which is a miracle product IMO) to the underside of the seat. All taken together the chair feels better than new, and it is nearly 100% quiet. Still not ergonomic, but pretty comfortable for a $40 chair, and most importantly it doesn't squeak while I'm recording guitar with a microphone.

Should work for another year.

18. A chair with multiple adjustments
Mon Apr 15, 2013, 08:52 AM

is the best ergonomic chair. However, you have to be willing to adjust the chair until it is a perfect match for you, and that takes time and experimentation. Too many people don't even think about making adjustments and sit in terrible positions for too long.
