linkThe research, reported online Jan. 30 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, is one of the first to test the effects of yoga on the heart condition, known as atrial fibrillation. Experts cautioned that while the findings are promising, more research is needed. Atrial fibrillation arises when the heart's upper chambers quiver chaotically instead of contracting normally; it's not immediately dangerous but can cause symptoms like palpitations, shortness of breath and dizziness.

Dr. Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy said his own father was a "yoga master," so he was familiar with the practice. But he was even more motivated by research showing that yoga can have calming effects on the nervous system, helping to lower blood pressure and heart rate. His team found that over three months of classes, patients started having fewer symptomsan average of two episodes, versus almost four in the three months before taking up yoga.

(40,416 posts)Yoga is both relaxation and exercise. Both are probably good for the heart.
It's nice to see it confirmed, however. But who couldn't have predicted this?

(39,308 posts)Yoga is more about a lifestyle and not some miracle when other means exist to calm oneself.
This is about culture more than medicine, and this guy is a good salesman.

(2,795 posts)I used to have atrial fib especially in the winter after getting out of condition over holidays and exercising less. But once I started walking, using exercise bike, and doing tai chi I no longer have problems with atrial fib.

(8 posts)I am doing yoga from about 3 years and i always tries not to miss it because of it's benefits.
Made my body strengthen and it increase the stamina as well.Make it a part of your daily routine that really works.
