Apparently the 9 million $ lawsuit is for customers who have left Netflix.
"The problem arises after users decide to leave the service.

Netflix likes to keep old data around. It allows the company to reach out to former subscribers, and those who do return probably appreciate that they don't have to start rating movies from scratch to receive proven movie picks.
The rub? Holding on to that data for too long -- under current law -- is illegal.'

Mine just showed up in what I thought was my private personal e-mail ( gotta change that, I guess)
and directs me to a website about the lawsuit.

Email says this:
Netflix has agreed to change its data retention practices so that it separates (known as “decoupling”) Entertainment Content Viewing History (that is, movies and TV shows that someone watched) from identification information for those subscribers who have not been a Netflix subscriber for at least 365 days, with some exceptions.

In addition, Netflix will pay $9 million into a Settlement Fund to:
• Make donations to Court-approved not-for-profit organizations, institutions, or programs.
• Pay notice and settlement administration expenses.
• Pay attorneys’ fees of up to 25% or $2.25 million of the Settlement Fund, plus up to $25,000 in expenses.
• Pay a total incentive award of $30,000 to the Named Plaintiffs.


Website says this:
a proposed settlement of a lawsuit that alleges that the Defendant kept and disclosed information, including records of TV shows and movies viewed by its customers, in violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act and other laws. Netflix denies it has done anything wrong.

Also applies to people who quit Netflix.....does that fit you?

Apparently there is some law that after you leave Netflix, they cannot keep your movie watching info.
for the length of time they did keep it.
and, unfortunatley, except those people who were part of the orginal lawsuit, no other ex-members get anything from the class action, unless they want to pursue a suit on their own.
The lawyers make out ok tho.

Yeah, ignore it.
Unless you plan on suing Netflix yourself, then you have to write in to say "take me out of the class action" which of course no one ever does, cause they cannot afford to sue on their own.
It is just a legal notice that Netflix is being sued and the lawyers are getting money.

7. Can't wait to see how much I get back..

This is the second class action lawsuit against Netflix in the last 2 years. The last one was vs. Walmart and I believe everyone got a $1.50 Walmart gift card. That was for a $27 million settlement. This is a $9 million settlement so you can only imagine what the payout will be...

9. If you read the details you don't get anything. A couple of million is given to charity,

the original litigants, and most to the lawyers.

10. In Class Actions, the lawyers are the only ones to get anything

I used to have an info-graphic that showed the largest settlements on record, the money the lawyers received, and the money the individuals in the class received. In one case the individuals received $5000 while the lawyers received millions. In the top ten cases, that was the only one that received over a few hundred. Most received nothing.

I received a letter asking me to mail in a claim in for my share of a class action against an insurance company.

My reward: 25¢
Cost of Stamp: 37¢

My latest "win" was an Allstate settlement last month.
I got a check for 3.00.
didn't cash it.
