Is it a generation thing? Silver Lining Playbook - lots of awards...we give it ONE star (out of 10)
No offense to those who liked or loved it (averages over 8/10 on IMDB) - but to my wife and I, it was a noisy, cliched, irritating, pointless, predictable, formulaic mess.
Always reminds me how the arts are such an individual thing as far as taste.
Sadly, we will never get those two hours back that we wasted on this film!

(4,178 posts)I so looked forward to getting this and I didn't enjoy it at all until the end. The end was good.
I'm of the grandparent generation.
IMO the best if the Oscar contenders movies was Beasts of the Southern Wild. Best performance was that little girl.

(17,276 posts)It was very different. Her performance was good. We also just enjoyed Daniel Day-Lewis as "Lincoln". The whole movie was really enjoyable, especially for someone familiar with the ways of politicians and the Congress. Sally Field was also good and she was very well cast for the part.

(60,006 posts)lots of swearing for no particular reason (and we are no prudes - we love six Feet under and the Sopranos).
maybe it is the crappy, filled with holes script? who knows....

(22,685 posts)I thought is was very predictable. And the characters were very irritating. My daughter and wife both liked it though. No accounting for taste i guess.

(42,770 posts)to see it and I lost interest so soon. There seemed to be so many story line flaws. He's literally tearing up the doctor's office, saying he doesn't want to go on meds because they make him lethargic and a zombie -- then he takes them (I assume?) and is dancing his brains out every day. He goes from acting violent and unhinged to being the responsible one who practices and finds JL in the bar and makes her dance at the competition. She flips from the responsible one to someone who changes on a dime and tries to blow off the whole competition. Then he goes from utter and total obsession with his ex to just completely not caring. Just too many flips.
I don't think it's a generational thing...but have no idea why people liked this so much.

(8,933 posts)I just watched it the other day. I found it confusing. Lots of swearing! It starts with a guy in a mental institution.... I did feel bad for the guy... I mean, his father sure puts a lot of pressure on him. I think the problem is how built up it was. I should no better than to listen to hype. So when I watched it it was quite a let down. I don't think it would have been that bad if it weren't for the hype. It has to be good since it won so many awards. Apparently not. Oh well. It was alright I guess.

(10,237 posts)...but we're originally from Philadelphia and were familiar with many of the locations. Jennifer had "Philly Girl" down perfectly and we're comfortable with her winning an Oscar.
BTW, I'm 58, my wife is 49.
PEACE!

(1,999 posts)I had heard it was good, and since they had it in the DVD library at the Red Cross I watched it while donating platelets. The upside is that sometimes I get drowsy during apheresis, but this time I stayed fully awake waiting for the movie to get better.
