Really basic question about streaming content

I just got a Sony BluRay player that seems ready to ... stream? I'm totally a noob about this, I don't have the first clue how this works.

The box has an ethernet port, and I have an internet cable available.

What I don't know is what happens then? I haven't connected the cable. It's my regular (Comcast) cable.

What happens when I plug it in? Will it automatically go to Netflix (or something) for content?

Thing is, I don't think I'd feel secure signing up for any type of account over anything but my computer because I have the security configured. Not sure how secure those DVD boxes are?

Should I just plug the cable into the box and see what happens?

Or will this revolutionize my world and I'll never ever want to leave the house again?

The difference, as I understand it, is that these boxes have hard drives cbayer Dec 2011 #3

When you plug it in, you will see a netflix option. You may have to download the software into your blu ray player.

Then, if it works the same as mine, you need a code to activate which you get on the netflix site.

If you are feeling unsure, probably the best place to look at how to do this is netflix.com. There you will find a tab about compatible streaming boxes and what you need to do to activate them.

Good luck. We love how these devices work and, despite the somewhat limited netflix content, use it all the time.

The clerk at Best Buy showed me an adapter than would let me stream Netflix to my tv through my phone. Has anyone done that?

My tv has the HDMI outlet but my laptop doesn't.

that allow you to collect and buffer the feed, then stream in high definition.

You can stream through other devices, like a laptop or iphone, but you won't get the same quality..... I think.

I don't like watching video on my computer and so far that seemed the only option for Netflix (streaming, that is).

Step 1 - You sign up for a Netflix account on your computer.

Step 2 - You connect your blu-ray player to the internet and to your TV and find Netflix on the blu-ray player menu.

Step 3 - Your blu-ray player connects to Netflix, and a message is displayed on the screen of your TV which includes an authorization code for that blu-ray player.

Step 4 - You go back to your computer, log into your Netflix account, and type in the authorization code for your blu-ray player

Your blu-ray player is now associated with your Netflix account.
