Merli

I am really enjoying this series about a high school philosophy teacher. One of his students is the son who just moved back in with him after years apart. Outside the classroom he a bit of a nebish and a bit of an asshole, but in the classroom, he teaches beautifully, not just the students but the audience, too.

The show is in Catalan on Netflix, and sounds lovely. I often watch things in Spanish or Italian, but this is a first for me. The subtitles are occasionally charmingly awkward - written by someone with good but not idiomatic English. If you watch, you'll see this in the watermelon conversation in episode 1: perfectly correct yet misses the joke.

But that's secondary to the warm feeling of the show.

Strike the nebish. Increase the asshole. I swear I've been in half a dozen shows with this guy's twin.

It was charming at first, but I lost enthusiasm.

Sometimes you find some hidden gems on netflix, especially in the foreign category so I had high hopes for this one.
