To pose a question about addiction to child porn?

We sadly learned today that a young friend who is serving in the Coast Guard was charged with watching child porn...or whatever the charge is for this.

Jimmy (not real name) grew up with our daughter. He's 29-30 years old. Always was a sweet guy. He was following a medical path in the CG. It's all over now and I'm struggling to understand ...

1. Addiction is addiction, so I think it's perfectly appropriate

We're hearing more about addictions lately, not just alcohol and drugs, though I have to admit that I don't understand this one, either. But I see stories about this in the local paper more frequently lately - and I live in a pretty small town.

There's a lot to be avoided on the internets. I'm in AA, nine years, but I've run into all kinds of other addictions in my travels, mostly drugs, but also overeaters, gambling - and there are all groups for that. There was also a girl who said she was looking or a group for sex addicts. But I haven't run into anyone who wanted to discuss addiction to child porn - probably because it's more likely to result in incarceration rather than treatment...

4. I did a little online research - made a point of looking for support groups

As you can imagine, it's mostly geared for those who have loved ones addicted to drugs or alcohol - though there were a lot of links here for other support groups, just not child porn. This had the most information:

This isn't specific to what you're looking for, but I've discovered all the "As" I've run across have the same basic model in common - since it's worked better than anything else for 82 years. When I first showed up at a women's AA group back in 2008, I was lucky to find a terrific sponsor - though really she found me. She initially took me to a lot of the As, Alanon, OA (Overeaters - though my issue was I couldn't eat) and CoDA (Codependents) - and they often use the same basic literature.

I'm not saying that all support groups are the same - in person, they're often very different - but the principles are the same. And there are meetings online - and via phone. I have a friend who listens to Overeaters' meetings via her phone most every day. She finds it helpful to just listen. I hope this helps - let me know how it goes...
