Related: About this forumI'm a little scared
At what's going on with me. Started like a week and a half ago.
Having olfactory hallucinations.
They are really weird smells mostly nasty smells. Smelled something like ketone and burning rubber while I tried to nap. I was totally grossed out by the smell. Got up to hit the bathroom and to find the source of the stench.. I was walking around sniffing when suddenly it just dissapeared like it was not there.
I'm scared because last time this happened I went psychotic and found myself in a scary strange reality. I ended up in the psych unit for a good while. I'm just scared. I just wanted to tell someone else . Maybe voicing it will make it less
Frightening to me. Kinda like hearing voices, and telling them to STFU makes them less intrusive. Thanks for being here DU.

(41,960 posts)Theyre pretty good at just helping you figure out what you need. You can be anonymous. They might give you some good ideas until you can figure out what you think should be your next step.
FYI various things can trigger olfactory responses. Some are benign but can take you by surprise. The Crisis Line can help direct you.
Good luck. Check back. People care.

(73,536 posts)And it makes for two positives that I see. First, you are aware that this is happening, and second, you know who to call. Those are both very important. Respect for both. Those are strengths. And that is something to keep in mind: you are a strong person, dealing at times with things that the average person could not begin to deal with. And that strenth will get you through this.

(679 posts)Also, please check out a FB group page for Parosmia/Phantosmia.
Did you have an upper respiratory infection? Did you hit your head??
Those are two common ways to get into smell trouble. If you had an infection, your sense of smell (SOS) will likely return within 18 months. If its COVID-19, Ive heard it returns shortly after the bout with the virus. In that FB group, a guy named Adrian Branch, in England, is knowledgeable and helpful. Reach out to him.
Best regards.

(51,585 posts)but don't the doctors say the symptoms may include losing your smell and taste? Too bad tests are in short supply and take forever to get results (thanks to Jared being in charge of testing).

(19,806 posts)To me 4 years ago after a big surgery. I smelled cigarette
Smoke then gasoline even when alone.
I dont smoke or own a car.
They did an MRI to make sure no tumor was
Causing the smell.
Nothing . No reason.
Get it checked out though.
My best friends daughter smelled garbage
And it turned out she had a large non cancerous
Tumor.

(1,041 posts)I see your posts on du and wish you had some real support. You should probably call a professional if you have access to any services. Unfortunately with Covid, a lot of those are probably not functioning....
I don't really do hugs but whatever they represent I send you in spirit...

(10,156 posts)Having smells like that is a big lead to strokes. You do not want that. Please get checked!

(51,308 posts)Who knows? Do you live in a city?
I've always had a very acute sense of smell, and I frequently smell odors before others do.
Stay safe anyway and trust your feelings!
