I need help and I'm not sure where to turn
My husband seems to have a problem with OCD and it is causing me problems.
In the morning we get up and he gets dressed and when he's ready to leave he insists we check the water. off. If I don't go he says "come on, please " until I do. He insists I go into the bathroom with me and ask me if the water in the tub is off. Then the water in the sink. Sometimes, he wants to go back and check again. Then the kitchen. We have to check the sink and the stove. He also has to stare at the washer and dryer for a while and sometimes check various electrical outlets. Today he left the house and came back 15 minutes later and insisted I check the water again. He doesn't think it's a problem. We don't currently have insurance. What can I do?

1. Get insurance.
and make sure it has psych as part of the benefits.
Psych is not always included. OCD will def be part of a psych diagnosis. |

3. Get professional IRL help.
DU is no place to ask for anonymous advice.....nor, IMHO, should it be given.

5. Try calling SAMHSA
Contact SAMHSA ( Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) at (800) 662-HELP (4357) or online . I think they have resources for people without health insurance. Good Luck!

9. May I ask some background questions (dont answer here out loud)
1. What kind of community do you live in as a whole: size, political makeup, distance to your region's center.
2. How about your nearest relatives. 3. And your neighbors 4. Finally, are either of you employed and in what profession. 5. Your age Health professionals and social workers will like to ask these. For a side project of mine, I visited the office of my local NAMI : National Alliance of Mental Illness. Here is their main webpage. https://www.nami.org/Home If we are lucky, some professionals will read this thread. If you visit or call your county's health offices, they will get you started. |

13. Yeah..
From your link "A lot of people with OCD feel very responsible for preventing a terrible thing from happening " I think this mostly started when the downstairs neighbor had a leak. Water was coming in from his ceiling. They thought at first nowe might have left the water running and had an overflow but what it was was a pipe that had burst. It wasn't us at all. That was about a year ago and it hasn't gotten better. I can't convince him that even if the water is running, if the stopper isn't in the sink it won't run over. It is literally impossible to have the water overflow if the stopper is not in the sink. It's illogical. |

12. I'm not a Dr. but OCD is sometimes a precursor to Dementia, my Mom
never had OCD until just a couple years prior to her being diagnosed with dementia. So sorry you both are going through this difficult time. I wish you luck, hugs, and hope.

17. Also this place works on a sliding scale and while it is probably far away from you, they
Do everything remotely and over zoom now, so it might be workable if to isn't a super long waiting list. No idea if it they will take you if you arent local, but it might not hurt to ask! https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/the-maple-counseling-center-beverly-hills-ca/476798

16. There is a free app with support called
NOCD. There are discussion boards within the app where you might reach out for help.
More info on the app and its other features here: I also recommend reading IMP Of The Mind (I forget who the author is) and Brain Lock by Jeffrey Schwartz. I have a loved one with OCD. Yes, it’s a problem and it sounds like OCD. You might also check for free support and resources in your area: https://iocdf.org/ocd-finding-help/supportgroups/ Good luck!! |

18. Call your local health department. They may be able to connect you with other resources and
may be able to provide services for free or a sliding scale. Most state Departments of Health can connect you with services in your area. Also, NAMI is a great resource.
You can call the NAMI Helpline at 800-950-6264 M-F, 10 am – 6 pm, ET Or in a crisis, text "NAMI" to 741741 for 24/7, confidential, free crisis counseling. ❤ lmsp |
