Great Sites for Texas Research

The Portal to Texas History--excellent resource for digitized old newspapers, photographs, maps, and books by University of North Texas.

Texas GenWeb Project--some counties have tons of info, some, not so much. http://www.txgenweb.org

General Land Office--some land grant info has been digitized. You can search the database for your ancestor. Maps here, too. Look under the tab "How Do I?".

Texas Death Records--odds and ends--http://olddeathrecords.org/category/browse-state/texas

Three-Legged Willie--Williamson County, but also a probate index for 11 counties

The Olden Times Historic Newspapers--http://theoldentimes.com

Did you have family in Williamson County? My Huffmans lived there for a while before many moved to Scurry County.
