I bought a 2 oz bottle of Porcini olive oil.

I really like it in scrambled eggs and Deviled eggs. It's a subtle taste but sooooo good.

Any other suggestions for getting the most out of it? Anyone made a compound butter with it and if so how much does it take?

The stuff's pretty precious so I don't want to waste it experimenting!

2. Central Market in Ft Worth.

If you're not familiar CM is a verrrry upscale grocery store, a part of HEB which is a Texas chain. If you're in the market for fresh pheasant or a suckling pig this is the place.

I was an hour early for a dental appointment a few blocks away so I went there to kill some time. I should never go there. I mean, never. $90 later I left with one small shopping bag. A few oz of exotic cheeses, some garlic olives and the mushroom oil. Bad me, bad bad me!

But like you said, bring money or a credit card with room on it. The produce department has almost 20 varieties of apples fer crissake!

Sounds like a good place to prep a rest stop picnic. I love a rest stop picnic with really, really good food.

I seriously wrote a note on my phone to go there next time through.

Thanks!

14. don't you love that if you want to taste one of those 20 kinds of apples,

all you have to do is "grab a foodie" and he/she will cut one up for you on the spot for tasting. This of course draws other shoppers to see what' s up and they sell more apples.

LOL first time I let my husband go there with me, I had to physically restrain him when we went around that corner from the bakery to the "cheese wall"

I think they carry 600 varieties of cheese - not all at once because some of them are only available at certain times of the year. The Great Wall of Cheese is a sight to behold.

Austin to stock up from CM

Now out of towners bring their coolers to FW!

CM is very easy to find. It is on Interstate 30 at the Hulen exit, south of the freeway.

waiting to happen for my bank account!

It is so much fun to shop there. When they first opened here, the first place folks would show their out of town guests was Central Market.

Now not everything is expensive: you can buy spices from bulk bins, measure them out and weigh them. You would be amazed how much money is saved right there.
They also carry many basic HEB house brand items, which are often the least expensive one can find.

They have a wide range of tea in bulk, and the usual rices, beans, other grains, granola, snacks etc.

Great selection of coffee.

Thinking of the olive oil: I never knew how many varieties of olive oil and vinegar existed!! ALso honey

I will not buy seafood anywhere else, and if there is a special on sirloin steaks I will pop in and buy one- we usually get 2 or 3 meals from one, especially if I make stir fry.

I love that all the produce is labeled with the source. CM will never branch out of Texas because they have a very well established supply chain which maintains the incredible freshness of the perishable goods.

So Andy, what part of FW ? Wedgwood here

3. Don't put it in stuff, drizzle some on top just before serving.

Use the standard EVOO in stuff that is being prepared.

You'll get far more of a flavor hit just drizzling a little porcini olive oil on just before serving, because it will directly hit your tongue.

I'm going to have to look for that porcini olive oil.

I had some truffle oil a long time ago and really liked it.

CM had truffle, both black and white, as well as a number of other mushroom infused oils, porcini among them. I'd like to try the rest of them but my retirement account is only so big . . .

I may have to try that. I just started buying higher quality oils. Since we don't go out anymore my grocery budget increased.
