There was a time when extensive tattoos was a hinderance to getting a job, especially one with public contact. People thought they had a bad image as far as representing their company. As recently as 20 years ago, when I worked as a car salesman, all tattoos had to be covered by clothing. I don't know how widespread that policy was, but it existed at most car dealerships I was aware of.

Being a chef is an out of public view job for the most part, and maybe it was just relatively lucrative a career path for someone with lots of tattoos that couldn't be covered up.

There was a time when Law Enforcement and Military service did not allow tattoos. They have had to change those rules because it eliminated a large percentage of the young population. They do have rules that limit them, though.

It seems to be the norm among the young these days, but I've never seen anyone look better with them than without.

I tend to llike themed tattoos. I've noticed cooks and chefs have food as a theme.. Me? nautical... Tats that are just willy nilly splattered all over the skin make no sense to me.. Like a dissonance chord in music. ymmv

I think he explained it was part of a bad boy profession. Bad language, drugs, profanity, etc is the norm in most kitchens he said.

Watch Hell's Kitchen with Gordon Ramsey or Top Chef. It just seems to be a trend that chefs get tats. I'm just wondering why. Is is peer pressure? What's the reason?

cook's way of being noticed besides a big white chef's hat. It could also be used to cover up burns from working in a kitchen.

11. I think it's kind of amusing that now the chefs who don't have them tend to be the stand outs.

Personally, I think they look unprofessional, but a person is entitled to deface their body however they please. I'm betting one of 2 women on Top Chef who aren't covered with them will win this time around.
