https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/08/dining/mre-meals-ready-to-eat.htmlPretty interesting to me as the mom of a soldier and a foodie. I think the job of developing these would be fascinating.
The comments are really interesting too.

(23,922 posts)When I served we were issued C-rats. The peaches were palatable (loved that juice!), but the ham and mother-fuckers (lima beans) were considered cause for desertion.
Then again, when one is hungry enough, or has sufficient tabasco sauce, one can eat damned near anything.

I'm hardly a gourmet cook. I will attempt to claim being an adequate home cook -- visit me and judge for yourself and I've found that it's not at all hard to cook decent meals from scratch. Not at all.

Oh, well, I'm sure lots of people would judge what I cook and eat.

(12,452 posts)My father being military brought home the army green cans of food. Once he brought home a ton of butter it was like 100 packs
He also brought home the delicious government cheese.
I actually miss the awesome grilled govt .cheese sandwiches .
No cheese you can get now like Velveeta or Kraft singles can touch government cheese.
I will never forget when I dropped a huge can of army green peas on my toe. It must have been 5 pounds of peas in it.
I yelled so loud my father heard me over the planer machine in the basement shop.
My toe hurt so bad even a cotton top sheet touching it made me howl in pain.
I was glad he brought the food home because alot of it was quite tasty. Never will forget the dry canned walnuts.
