Smothered Pork Chops
I'm making smothered pork chops with caramelized onions, mushrooms and french cut string beans for my lunches next week. Will they turn out better if I do them in my crock pot or my instant pot? Also, should I brown the chops first for the maillard reaction or just throw them in the cooking appliance?

I’d definitely brown them first.
Are you doing the string beans separately? |

2. Nah
Took the lazy way out and bought canned green beans, going to dump everything together and cook it all at the same time

3. Don't know, but must have smothered pork chops!
I'll be watching for answers. In the past I've always browned them in a braising pan on the stove, then moved them to the oven, but would love to do it this way.
Thanks for bringing it up. ![]() |

4. Brown them on the IP saute' setting first
On second thought, if the beans are canned, they will turn to mush in the IP. Cook stovetop.

5. I'd heat the beans separately and then add them after the pork chops are done
That way the beans wouldn't get mushy even when reheated.
I seriously can't stand mushy green beans. You get them a lot here in the south, from home canned goods usually. They cook them til you could sling a spoonful at the wall and they'd stick. Ugh. I can't eat that. |

7. Well, only one pot to wash
if you brown them in the IP. In the interest of full disclosure, I am not that fond of the way meat browns in the IP, so I usually brown it on the stove , but people say I'm crazy for doing that.

6. suggestion
Take the string beans out of the final version of the dish and if you want to have beans with it, put in fresh or another can.
View the beans as flavoring for the first part of cooking the dish. |

8. I'm going to caramelize/saute the onions and mushrooms first
For added flavor. I guess I can then brown the chops in the same pan for added flavor then into the IP with the sauce
