(111,152 posts)Stuff tastes like airline food at this altitude without hot pepper somewhere in it. Just a pinch of cayenne in the béchamel does it for French stuff, not enough to taste, just enough to wake those taste buds up.
Jalapeno bagels threw me into culture shock when I first moved here. Now I get it.

(36,269 posts)...but what I really crave is heat and fragrance. Fish sauce with vinegar and Thai chilies, chili oil with all the bits and seeds (and Sichuan peppercorns for ma la). Good stuff, Maynard!

(3,280 posts)We grew Padron peppers on our balcony this year. Very vigorous and prolific plant. The peppers look like jalapeno-sized shishito peppers, and ripen to red. Variable in heat, but similar to a jalapeno, but with a much nicer flavour. Will definitely be growing those again. Also grew Thai birdseye peppers which are always great to grow and use. We've got a lot of both pickled and dried home-grown Thai peppers.
