I'm thinking about changing my wall color and am looking for some inspiration!
Those are picture from just before we moved in. I can't find my camera or I would shoot it today. The modern chrome handles are missing, but it gives you a sense of the room. The floors are stained black concrete. And it's really easy to change the feel of the room depending on what photography and artwork I use, so I don't really want a patterned wall. I'd basically just like to change from the red. I have floral paintings and photography up right now.
The wall to the right is all built-ins, fridge, and the pull out pantrys. Most of my counter top appliances are white or stainless/chrome. And the room opens out into the great room with a view of the woods so it has a "warmer" vibe than shows in the photos. And my african violets are on the island, which is bigger than it looks.
What colors are in your kitchen? And do you do anything to change it up?

(111,120 posts)because I'm always conking myself in the head with an open cabinet door. Upper storage has been for dishes and jars of beans and grains, pretty stuff. The cabinets with the doors store cleaning product, boxes of cereal, and other ugly stuff.

(6,581 posts)Everything from the godawful Avocado Green in the 70s, to yellows, off white, and currently its a butternut squash color I painted it back in 2004. About time for a change again myself, but I may just do something with the countertops and keep the walls the same, since I really do like the color in there.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)is either green or the orange. lol Small world!
Warpy
(111,120 posts)White cabinets, mottled green countertops, white appliances and sink, interior of cabinets painted a weird bluish green that's one of the colors in the countertop, vinyl woodlike floor, hunter green curtain on the window. I spray painted the cabinet hardware hunter green when I painted them white. The colors all work even if the kitchen (designed by a man who never cooked) doesn't.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)I designed the kitchen when I was going through chemo, so I planned where every single piece rests. It works really well for me, hopefully the next cooks who move in will like the layout, even if they aren't a fan of modern kitchens. lol

(50,130 posts)Light apple green is *my* color always. And in the way it's current being used in decorating, it is SO fresh. Just love it. Works with neutrals well -- browns, grays, tans, blacks, cream, putty, etc. I love it with cement and stainless, too.
So if I were doing a kitchen, I'd like that.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)and I've also been leaning towards a soft orange/squash color. I've been waffling between the two for a while.

(14,807 posts)Goes well with oak tones also. Very old fashioned color.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)It's really a versatile color and would add some nice warmth. I have a lot of plants and pottery in my kitchen that you don't see in the top pictures, so it's sort of modern and rustic at the same time....
glinda
(14,807 posts)white vinyl clad windows with light oak trim and it looks great. My appliances are black and or white. I love putting orange roses in that room when I can afford them. I would say the colors of our home all have to do with stones, clays, natural tones including a pale grey blue green moss tone.
Just make sure you do not pick a too pink infused tone. Safe bet is to think "clay pots" etc......

(53,661 posts)The major appliances are black and stainless steel. It has faux granite black/almond color counters, almond walls and IKEA birch cabinetry with stainless pulls. And the floor matches the cabinets. My counter appliances are black, stainless or chrome or combinations. My dishes, cups and tea pot are black as well.
The stainless sink has chrome controls and is set at an angle, forming a triangle in a corner and is more decorative than useful. I got a lamp with a stainless base and stem and a white linen shade. The only other color is the dark green pots for a fern and a fuchsia plant on eacb side of the lamp behind the sink.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)the closest Ikea to me is several hours away in Atlanta. Are you happy with them? I loved the look of them, and if we build again I may still go that route.

(31,170 posts)The rain has made it rough for me the past few days.
I didn't notice an increase in pain last spring or summer when it rained, but this winter I am definitely seeing more pain on cold rainy days. My tart cherry stuff is helping though, so it's bearable without making me too crazed. I am really taking it easy though.

(2,351 posts)homey kitchen - it looks very welcoming! Love your cook-top island. We used to have a Jenn-Aire grill in an island. Oh, how I miss that!
(My sis has a set-up kind like yours that I've always loved.)

Lucinda
(31,170 posts)And I love the windows. It also looks like you have really efficient storage. That makes it so much easier to work.
Bill had wanted concrete counters, but I wasn't sure so we went with tile. Yours has a nice elegant feel to it.
It would have been handy to have a cooktop in our island like yours, but I decided to keep ours open. Mine has baskets of fruits and veggies and my african violets, and I can easily clear it off if I need it as buffet table. Plus it was easier to vent it from the back wall.
maddezmom
(135,060 posts)but it gives me a bit of exercise.
In my last house here in Houston, I used red color very similar in my family room that was adjacent to my kitchen. Most of my accent colors are either red or bright green.

(912 posts)tinted varnish. So it ends up being a sort of swirled goldish to squash color with interesting texture! Plus it washes down beautifully. My cabinets are old wooden ones on one wall I painted a creamy white and the floor old plywood disguised by painting a cranberry and cream 12" square pattern on the diagonal. Have freestanding kitchen cabinet painted goldish cream with cranberry interior. I am now thinking of taking some doors off the one wall of cabinets and painting the interiors of the ones I store bowls and pretties in. I have been debating between the cranberry or maybe a dark green. My dishes and bowls etc. are all tending to deep reds, assorted greens and golds. Oh, and my stove and frig are white and counters off white. I like the no upper cabinets, but in an old house have to use all the storeage space available!
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)It gives a fresh look to the kitchen and would let you enjoy all the pretty pieces. I keep a lot of my house neutral so I can change up the feel by swapping out pillows or rugs, and accessories, so I like the cream tones you use too.
I did a tinted glaze in blue in the downstairs bathroom. It's a little messy, but I was recovering from cancer and was thrilled I could actually do the work! lol I even managed to lay my counter tiles and the counter in my upstairs bathroom.

(34,131 posts)We'd lived in a double wide trailer for 30 years and it got so it was pouring money down a black hole. Plus, my knees got so bad that getting up and down the stairs into the house was dangerous. This house has everything I need on the first floor, with two spare bedrooms and a bath on the second to improve resale potential.
I love my kitchen!

(34,131 posts)The sink and all the cabinets were from IKEA.
The Domsjo sinks are a lot cheaper than most apron sinks - right now the price is $312, a steal for a huge double bowl apron sink. We paid $99 from their As Is room, though that is not the sink that ended up in the house. The tile guy broke the original one and had to replace it. By that time the price was $299, but he felt lucky.

(31,170 posts)The Ikea pieces look wonderful...and it looks like you have a lot of great storage. That would be a great kitchen to cook in!

(34,131 posts)I kind of wish I had put the oven stack in the corner, though. The original plan was to do that and put a table height peninsula from about where the oven is now. I forget why we changed it, but now I wish I had not. Both the oven and the microwave have their hinges on the left, so they kind of open away from the main cooking area. The oven can change, but it would take a major effort to get the workers to do it and it just doesn't seem worth it.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)There are three passages into and out of my kitchen so I only have one true corner, and its to the right of my sink. I usually keep my big mixer in it and some pottery, but I could have worked in an oven there. It never occurred to me!
I put my wall oven to the right of the back wall... It's the first block of cabinets on the built-in wall. The oven door opens down into the doorway, and it works pretty well because I can just approach from the side, and pivot from the oven to that back counter to take things out. Plus I am pretty weak, so I don't have to walk carrying hot pans. If I build again I think I will lower the oven a bit, and put the micro on top. It would be easier for me if it wasn't quite so high up.
csziggy
(34,131 posts)Those two together extend all the way across the middle of the house.
I set the oven low enough that if I ever need, I can put a landing spot in the drawer next to it and just slide pans off onto that. Plus, it is a side opening oven so I don't have to reach across the door to get things out. I found it in an article about kitchens planned for wheelchair accessibility. The sink could also be adapted to reach from a wheelchair and the entire first floor is wheelchair accessible, including the bathrooms.
I don't need a chair now, but my knees are terrible. If I ever get so I can't get around, this house is ready for me!

(34,131 posts)The kitchen looks high end but every single thing in there was bought at a sale or with a discount. The refrigerator/freezer combo was bought at a sale and cost less than a standard fridge and chest freezer (like we used to have) would have cost. I love the size of them (16+ cubic feet each) and that they are counter depth so I don't lose stuff like I used to in the chest freezer.
In fact the total cost for ALL the appliances in our house was less than many people pay for one major appliance. Every appliance was 20% or better, some had rebates on top of that, some were less because they were scratch and dent or end of year sales.
The cabinets are IKEA and I assembled every one of them. Got them at 20% off with my ceramic cooktop and pullout stove vent. The open shelves were built by a subcontractor on the house who ended up eating the expense because he screwed up royally on several counts.
The counters are porcelain tile at a much lower cost than stone or engineered products. The marble back splashes were reclaimed material bought at a state surplus sale - they came out of the Florida state capitol building when it was remodeled in the 1970s. We bought other stuff when it was auctioned and used a lot in the house.
As for the color - that blue gray is one of my favorite colors. And it's nice that it is a good compliment to the orangey color of the oak cabinets. The floor tiles are great since they actually pull in other colors - some green, reds and yellows - in a very subtle blend.

(9,791 posts)It's so dramatic with the white cabinetry and eye-catching. It's very pretty.
I have light pine cabinets that I want to paint a deep cinnamon color for some contrast and drama. I tiled the countertop and backsplash with bone 4 X 4s. I used a few hand painted tiles with herbs in clay pots on the backsplash to add interest and some color. Last year we installed a mottled cream colored porcelain 12 X 12 tile floor and added a black glass counter top stove and stainless fridge to bring our 60s home into the 21st century. I tend to go for warmer colors.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)bathroom, everything else is textured white walls, and we have lots of glass, so we see a lot of blue sky and greenery from all the trees, so it's a modern house, but with a strong sense of the outdoors. I use lights on dimmers at night, or candles, and the walls just glow. So pretty and it warms the white walls up. Bill LOVES the red but I'm ready for a change.
I'm envious of your light floors! I despise my black floors. I have three indoor/outdoor cats, and Bill, so they are always messy. Bill wanted a really black floor so he stained them heavily and they ARE gorgeous when freshly mopped. In the guest room he went much lighter, and it is a warm beautiful tortoise shell color. I wish it was all done that way.

(10,170 posts)would be my choice, but then I always like ocean color schemes. I think a person's palette should showcase their most flattering colors and we should look good in our homes. I also like it when every color in my house works with every other color in my house room to room. On the North side I do warmer colors and on the South side cooler. For me it is all about the interaction of the color and the daily light that hits the room.
Are you a Brunette with a jewel tone palette? The color choices in that kitchen would be a good background for that coloring, also for a dramatic blond.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)But I use my artwork and paintings, plants, and the view through the windows to change the colors up for the most part in the house. My lighting is great for my skin tone though! There is a tall wall of windows in the great room that the kitchen opens into, and all but two rooms in the house have a lot of windows. There isn't a single window in the master loft, or in the kitchen. So the view, and play of light work change the feel a lot throughout the day...

I'm going to try to be fearless with color as the whole house is beige, white, taupe, etc. I have lots of moldings and built-ins that are white and probably will keep them that way for now but I'm working on my palette for the rest of the rooms.

(2,351 posts)My first kitchen was pretty wild like that in 1970's. Upstairs apartment. Lime green trim with bright yellow walls and a B&W checkered floor. The teeny tiny toilet room (water closet) was off one side of the kitchen and the bathtub/sink room was off in another side of the kitchen. That house was extremely old and been renovated many times. I decorated that place like the crazy hippy newlywed I was. Much fun.
We also had material (stapled on the walls) for wallpaper in the living room in a crazy wild pattern and I made the drapes to match!
It was something like this.
Now I live with another who likes it totally boring and our entire house is blah with no color.
