disincentive to eating the skin!

However, you can't go wrong with either pasta or stir fry.

It comes that way. Some company has specialized in very thinly sliced chicken. I like it 'cuz it's very light when you cook it.

I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do with it, though. Maybe just saute it and make a peanut sauce to go with it.

Bit of scrounging, so dinner isn't exciting...

But...

Our resident tomato planting expert sent me seeds!

So this spring I'll be trying my hand at 'Dwarf Sweet Sue', 'Rosella Purple', and 'Little Lucky'.

I guess this means I should buy his book to have my best odds at actually getting them to grow

Those names sound like fun tomatoes!!

I'm planting tonight. I have three large containers of soil out and all I have to do is put the seeds in and water them. For sure I'm doing peppers.

So excited!

are having a bit of trouble right now, looking a bit droopy. I don't know if I'm just not watering enough, or if I need to move them away from the window when they're not in light, if they're getting too cold.

I bought a 1.75 lb turnip on November 29.

Tonight, I finally got the last of it worked into a salad! We're having a red cabbage, red onion, turnip, grapefruit, turkey slaw with cumin. Added some guac in to replace half the mayo. It's a little dish I like to call "random-leftovers-shut-up-it's-good."

Now THAT is a root veg! (Turnips rock...)

I bought a few in prep for the O-so-American-not-so-Irish-St.-Paddies-Day-corned-beef-and-cabbage.

Why? Because that's when corned beef goes on sale.

for the point ones, not flat. I guess it has more fat than a flat cut, but it still seems like a good deal - I'm looking forward to that meal!

I used to live in Chicago--we tried to buck up but spring could never come soon enough, especially when the snow turned into black slush. Sometimes a hot toddy and chicken soup help but it sounds like a cruise in the Caribbean is what we need after this winter.

Today finally made it into the 40s, which was nice for a change. The snow has been black ice with the cold; today's it's likely turning to slush. I hope that it warms up for you, too.

But, I'll save that for Sunday. Tonight is a ham steak, scalloped potatoes (yeah, from a box) and steamed asparagus.

I pulled the lamb shanks out from the freezer, in prep for tomorrow's lamb shank shepherd's pie.

Q: Why doesn't anyone make lamb stock for commercial sale??? There's always the "big three" - chicken, beef, and veggie. It pisses me off... Oh, and I actually found a seafood stock in a box, but I wasn't impressed.

So, I'll make lamb stock with shank bones... but what a hassle.

had to go to work this afternoon, so ihad a late lunch of a torta de asada from the taqueria across the street from the office and then some bacon-wrapped, feta- and almond-stuffed dates at my pub before i went grocery shopping.

but i'll be busy tomorrow. my sunday routine has become making hummus and tabbouleh for the husband's lunches and i'll be putting up a batch of antipasti salad, as well. dinner will be something involving chicken strips, but i'm not sure yet.
