Or Knights of Columbus or the Elks Lodge...
Around here there are many choices, but my favorite is the VFW.

(13,186 posts)At the VFW (I say "we" because I was an officer of the post in the past), but stopped when we got video gaming machines.
We can't be seen as having a secondary gaming operation and keep our gaming systems.
It's too bad, every meat shoot a fun day

(40,416 posts)All you can eat fish & chips for $7, Wed., Fri., and Sat. evenings.
Best fish&chips in west Michigan. These days, I can finish only the first serving. No more refills for me. But if one is really hungry, they'll keep bringing more fish (and/or chips) until you are done, no charge.
The place is regularly packed in spite of the fact that it's in the middle of nowhere.
It's cod, BTW. The way it ought to be.

(34,661 posts)Southern Minnesota Friday night Walleye feeds at the Belview VFW this Summer. If we decide to return late fall, well it will be Lutefisk Suppers at the local Lutheran Church's. Usually Tuesday and Friday nights. Swedish Meatballs and dirty Mashed Potatoes. Cake and Pie for desert.

(40,416 posts)Keep that stuff away from me. Now lefse is great! I'm all over that. Pickled herring, too. Yummy! (Although the latter comes more from my mother's Finnish side of the family.)

(34,661 posts)Of course herring cutlets, usually someone brings homemade herring made with Hammer Handle Pike, but,Lutefisk in cream with tons of Butter. German Potato Salad finds it way into most of these feeds. Now,that is worth the price of admission.

(40,416 posts)That, and bleu cheese. I have learned what my triggers are and after an entire lifetime of severe migraines I haven't had one in years.
Plus, who wants baked fish that was preserved in lye that has the consistency of jello? Smothered in cream sauce, no less!
IMHO Lutefisk is horrible stuff.
Sorry.
Now I'm all over yummy lingonberries. Not enough people know about that treat. Especially on aebleskiver!

(34,661 posts)Dried Cod from Sweden, and Norway for the most part, shipped in bales like shingles and called dried Cod. It becomes Lutefisk after these dried Cod slabs are reconstituted in stock tanks with warm water and Lye,yes Lewis lye. Don't remember what the soak time was,but it is rinsed and put in plastic lined tubs for shipment.
Sold this Scandinavian Delicacy Wholesale for more than a decade. Still remember going to Olsen Fish Company in Minneapolis twice a week starting in the middle of October till Xmas Week. Lutefisk and Tubs of Herring.

(40,416 posts)Then, one has to soak the lye out of it, rendering it soft. Usually baked, it comes out like a white glutinous mass, the consistency of Jello. Top it with some horrible cream sauce, never before associated with any kind of fish.
Creamy fish jello? I could never stand the stuff.
I find it astounding how many people rave about lutefisk. I just rave at it.
BTW, I will take the tubs of herring, especially pickled.
Yummy! Especially served on knackebrod.

(34,661 posts)teat each forty gallon Tub to see if it was to their liking. They would reach in a grab a piece, rinse it off and eat it. I Know I know, there should be a law.

(40,416 posts)My father was Norwegian; my mother Suomilainen (Finnish). Growing up in Detroit, there were plenty of Scandenavians around. But I grew up first in a Jewish and then a catholic neighborhood.
But when family got together to feast it was nearly always Scandinavian fare. My mother was a champion baker. She made a wicked nisua!

(9,259 posts)Healthy, low in calories. I like standard tuna salad (drenched in mayo). Crab, lobster and shrimp are divine. Fish-fish? Bleah.
