Roast leg of lamb
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Peas with mint
Pound cake with whipped cream and strawberries

Yesterday I made saffron bread with fruit and orange mini muffins for the breakfast at church today. The muffins all disappeared at church, but there were two loaves of saffron bread, one of which I kept back, so we'll be snacking on that for awhile.

The Landlady(!) and I are alone for Easter Sunday and we took the Q Train to NYC's Brighton Beach today. After a nice long walk next to the Atlantic Ocean, we went shopping at a local Russian supermarket called Gourmandoff. (The neighborhood is predominantly populated by Russian emigres and their families.)

It was amazing! The entire store was filled with specialty items. The produce section was just gorgeous to look at and had many varieties of every fruit and vegetable. The bakery had all kinds of lovely freshly made products. The seafood department was incredible and we had to resist our desire to buy one or two of each. The butchery was filled with beef, pork, fowl, sausages and some game meats, both fresh and pre-packaged. They had every kind of bologna ever conceived. Every other section of the store was equally remarkable. We felt like we were pre-teens in the toy store.

Anyway, here's the meal we selected from the beautiful offerings:

Seafood Appetizer
Herring in Olive Oil with Mediterranean Spices
Green Olives Wrapped in Anchovy Filets
Beluga Caviar on Slices of Cucumber with Lemon and Dill

Roasted Rack of Lamb
8 Ribs of Frenched Lamb Ribs Marinated in Indian Spices
Aloo Paratha (Indian Bread Stuffed with Mashed Potatoes and Peas)
Basmati Rice
Shitake Mushrooms and Fennel Sautéed in Red Onion and Garlic

Dinner Wine
Rioja (2016, although I have no idea if that means a damn thing)

Dessert
Mango and Apple Slices

Two things that make me chuckle. First, the supermarket is in an old movie theater and the ticket office is still in front of the entrance. They still have relics from that building's heritage and there's a stage on which I think they occasionally have performances. Second, we bought the food at a Russian store but we're making an Indian dinner. Weird.

Happy Easter and a blessed Passover to all of our foodie friends!

tomato salad, and oven-roasted asparagus. The aspargus comes from crowns that my parents planted on this piece of land back in 1980. The old aspargus bed has become too shady to produce much but, over the years, the birds have helped to plant enough on the fence rows so that we have about 3 lbs. per week. I usually save it up for an entire week and roast the whole batch on Sunday when the family comes over for lunch. Sometimes we only have 8, but most often we have 12 people. Even the youngsters love it, and we always make jokes about how to ration the spears so everyone can have an equal amount.

Oh, and we had lime pie for dessert!

Beef rib roast with mushrooms in garlic butter, twice baked potatoes. asparagus in lemon butter, big tossed salad, blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. i got a workout cooking,. Everyone is gone, I have cleaned my kitchen and ready for a nap.

I miss having little kids around. On Saturday I'd boil 2 or 3 dozens eggs and dye them pretty colors/ I'd always make a bunny cake baked in a mold and frost with white icing and coconut. Surround the bunny with coconut dyed green and with candy Easter eggs, Then always, the Easter egg hunt in the front yard, It would be so much fun, we'd had the eggs two or three times,

Tim and his wife Nikki made a wonderful glazed ham dinner, complete with mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, sautéed asparagus, garden salad, crescent rolls, and chocolate cream pie.

Oh, and I got a healthy serving of time w/ my smart and beautiful granddaughter, Lily.
