Related: About this forumAnybody try that twitter post about an easy way to peel garlic?
https://mashable.com/article/viral-hack-peel-garlic-twitter/I tried it but I think my way works just as good and maybe better. When I tried the twitter method I got half pieces and some just would not come out. Maybe withpractice... meh..

(13,892 posts)It's a method that chef Jamie Oliver uses. In this vid it's the second method.
I do a bit of a variation as I leave the knife and the end on the cutting board and lift the clove. This take away a big piece of the skin on the cutting board. THEN I give it a smack and shake the pointy end.
This vid shows it at time marker 2:22
Most time if you just grab the pointy end and shake, the clove just drops out. If you want to do a whole bulb of garlic just cut off the flat top part and then smack it with the knife. Grab the pointy ends and shake out the clove.. Easy peasy lemon squeasy!!
YMMV, works for me..

(16,334 posts)I just cut off the rough tip and peel away a section. Then I just use my nails to peel it just like an orange. I don't understand needing a gadget to do this when I've got my chopping knife. I use a lot of garlic but I suppose if I had to peel hundreds of cloves like in a restaurant kitchen, I might be looking for another way.

(13,892 posts)I saw the demo at a home show. Way too expensive for what was. Even on Amazon/ebay so I passed. I was in iKea one day and I saw a silicone popsicle tubes, 3 for 1$.. Such a deal and the same thing. I recently picked up the original at Homegoods for $2.99 just to see if it was any better... meh.. Returned it. For me the knife thing technique works the best.
I love garlic..

(25,848 posts)The method of smacking it under a large knife is the basic go-to. I will be honest and say that because in my earlier years I never used garlic, the first time I was visiting a friend who was cooking dinner and she did that, I thought it was extremely pretentious. Nope. I simply didn't understand the point of fresh garlic.
Garlic is remarkably inexpensive. It usually costs 50 cents for a bulb of garlic, and in my case because I don't use too much of it, I usually wind up having to throw away at least some of the bulb. Not a problem. Next time I'm at the grocery store another 50 cents stock me up.

(36,827 posts)If I want roasted garlic I slice off the stem end of an entire head, wrap in aluminum foil with some olive oil and roast in the oven. If I want it sautéed I usually leave it in the shell and deal with it after. If I want it sliced or diced I will give it a crush with the flat of a knife and it pops out.
