National Sugar Cookie Day - July 9

My mother baked everything ‘from scratch’ and made a lot of cookies throughout the year.
One popular cookie among us kids were sugar cookies, which she’d decorate with colored icings and sprinkles.

Backside of gravestone. Every time someone would ask Mom for her recipe for Christmas Cookies, she'd reply "Over my dead body!"

Found on F/B.

Best Sugar Cookie Recipe for Xmas Cut-Out Cookies

1 cup Butter
2 Cups Sugar
1 egg
2 egg yolks
Grated rind of two oranges
2 tablespoons orange juice
3 3/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg, yolks, orange rind, and juice to creamed mixture

Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Add to creamed mixture, mixing well. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours. If dough becomes too soft, return to fridge for 20 minutes,

Work dough in small batches, roll thin and cut out shapes. Place cut-outs on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper; Bake cookies at 375 degrees

Watch cookies and remove from oven when edges begin to brown. Let sit on cookie sheet for a few minutes to firm up, then transfer to wire rack to cool.

Once cooled, frost with thin glaze of powdered sugar mixed with a little milk, coffee or fruit juice. I usually made a batch with milk, maybe 2 cups powdered sugar thinned with milk. Then place portions in small bowls and color and/or flavor as wanted. Make other batches, using lemon juice and color yellow or green.

After frosting the cookies,, let dry on rack. When dry, store in cookie tins in layers lined with waxed paper. They keep well, I used to make them the first week of December to have for Xmas

This recipe is from my file. The orange gives a nice taste, the cookie is not too soft, just a little crisp and stands up to sending in packages. I still use cookie cutter I purchased in Germany 40 years ago.
