Went out of my way to pick up a favorite at a local diner, used to have good crab/vege soup. Just tasted it, and it's the most over-salted item I've ever had.
ANY way I can save it from the trash, like adding a cut-up potato?
Thanks

(7,947 posts)Supposedly there's some chemical reaction that neutralizes the salt. But I don't know if that would work on a small amount.
Another option is to dilute the salt by adding in more liquid, like if this is a broth, add in some salt-free chicken broth, or just water, or if it's a cream soup, add some milk.
I have heard about using a potato, but it didn't work for me. I think it might work better if you are still cooking the soup.

(55,004 posts)also what is the liquid base? if it is cream or broth, you could try diluting or replacing part of that...

(36,818 posts)1) Eat spoonful of soup
2) Down shot of tequila or mescal (cheapest you can find)
3) Suck on lime wedge
4) Repeat steps 1-3 until soup is gone or you vomit

(130,757 posts)(which is why it USED to be such good soup!)
I cut up and par-boiled small potato, and added potato and hot water to a bowl, from which I've been eating (slowly.)
I'm really disappointed in the soup, may have to travel further (to a more expensive restaurant) to achieve my goal!

(130,757 posts)Will try it, IF the problem arises again. For the time, being potatoes + water have kept me from missing dinner(s!)
