Ours doesn't seem all that "Christmas-y" but it will be a good meal and I'll be thankful to be a part of it.
Dinner w/ be at the home of Dad/Sis (Sis owns the two-family dwelling.) Another sis will be joining us, as will my guy.
Prime Rib cooked outside on the grill. My sis is GREAT on the grill. In my mind the only down-side to this is that there are no drippings for gravy.
Mashed potatoes (with doctored-up gravy from a mix or jar).
Asparagus--probably also done on the grill.
Roasted carrots. (I don't care for carrots all that much and as such I've never roasted them.)
Crescent rolls.
Dessert will be a banana cream pie. One sis isn't eating chocolate these days (free-trade issues) and the other LOVES banana cream pie. I also wanted to make a bread pudding for everyone (using dried cranberries and orange zest), but one week out from pay day I can't spare the eggs or the bread and we can't afford the oranges or the cranberries (as it is, my family paid for the ingredients for the pie, and well, for everything else that will be on the table.)
So, for me this looks a lot like a Sunday dinner I would have had growing up. But it will be delicious and I do feel lucky to be with some of my family. The added bonus is great food, whether it's Christmas-y or not.
I wish joy for you all!

(31,950 posts)lovely! Prime rib, asparagus and mashed potatoes, to me is indeed a Christmas-y dinner!
We're having a repeat of Thanksgiving dinner here. Not my first choice, but it's what it is and I am grateful for it. My son's employer gave out turkeys for Christmas, so that pretty much sealed it.
We have done stuffed salmon in the past, plus a roast, but I can't find wild-caught salmon any more that doesn't require me to take out a loan to buy it, especially for 4 hungry guys. My hubby doesn't eat red meat these days either.
Merry Christmas Miss Millie, and to all here at DU!

(9,258 posts)Never had prime rib on the grill. Ive only made it once at home. DH likes it semi-raw and I do not.
I love making Christmas dinner - so much easier than Thanksgiving - no peeling or gravy.
Spiral Ham
Hash Brown Casserole (Funeral Potatoes)
Green Bean Casserole (with all the canned stuff. Cream of celery instead of mushroom. Yum!)
Broccoli/cauliflower/carrot mix (brother requested at least one thing low-carb. Then he will stuff himself on potatoes, dessert and beer.)
Coleslaw
Rolls - might try from scratch this year
Pumpkin pie, cookies
Beer/wine/soda/coffee

(6,793 posts)I have not had banana cream pie for ages. Make the bread pudding to welcome the New Year. Hope, hope, hope that 2020 rids us of the orange pestilence.

It's just too cold in the Catskill Mountains (6º F this morning) to use our grill so I'll have to cook indoors.

(1,705 posts)is that it's something the family enjoys together. What we're having may not sound all that Christmas-y, but we'll enjoy it:
Relish tray with raw vegetables and pickles and olives
Pot roast (has the added advantage of not needing a lot of attention during cooking)
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Stuffing (quite unnecessary, but we really like it)
Sweet spicy roast parsnips
Flan
Luciferous

(10,132 posts)I do a traditional-ish Polish Wigilia, a pesco-vegetarian meal. Tonight we're having curried squash soup, cheese pierogi, vegan Gołąbki (cabbage rolls with mushrooms in place of the traditional meat), mushroom tart, grilled fish with an herb sauce. Two of the guests are bringing salads and desserts.
Tomorrow's dinner is leftovers.

(42,770 posts)Campbell's beef consomme (believe it or not, good), boil and add flour mixing in water to thicken. Must have to finish off - dashes of Gravy Master. Actually not too bad.
Agree 100% on grilling...no drippings. Same with smoked turkey.

(3,922 posts)Love Prime Rib on the grill - I use a Weber kettle and do it indirectly with two separate fires on the sides and drip pan in the center.
That way you can get some of the drippings.
Merry Christmas/Happy Seasons!

(13,357 posts)Making BBQ here too...there may be snow outside here in Tahoe, but we're going for it!
Got a bunch of chicken thighs, and a couple bacon wrapped steaks
mashed taters
roasted sweet taters
stuffing
gravy
roasted carmelized brussel sprouts (marinated in strawberry balsamic vinaigrette)
deviled eggs
& black olives for appetizers
(for lunch I am throwing cheap mac n cheese and canned soup at the kids)
OH! I forgot dessert... Since my friend's Bday is today, I'm making a strawberry cake with funfetti sprinkles, using a special Butterfly pan
