What's happened to sesame seeds? Are they being bleached or something?

I swear 40-something years ago, I could bite into just one seed and the flavor was strong and filled my mouth. Sesames were the best part of Italian bread. Today, there just isn't any flavor in a whole bunch of them on a bagel.

Anyone else notice this?

We buy either raw or toasted white sesame seeds and use them in a lot of different recipes where they provide lots of flavour and texture. I have not noticed them being tasteless or bland.
