I'm making cabbage soup today

It’s easy and good. Besides ground beef, onion, garlic, celery, carrot, cabbage, tomato, stock, bay leaf, salt and pepper, anyone have any favorite ingredients to add?

1. That sounds like the soup I sometimes make if I feel a cold coming on.

I add LOTS and LOTS of garlic. Also, Caraway seed adds a good flavor to anything with cabbage, IMHO. I saute it in a little oil to really release the flavor.

7. Butter Bean Soup at my house on a cold and rainy day.

Put the dried beans on to soak early morning so they'll be good to go about lunchtime. I'm adding some kielbasa sausage, onions and garlic. Gonna have to dive into the freezer and find that lost pkg of celery and carrots, already pulled out the kale. In a serendipitous find, I also discovered some leftover cornbread, so I'm ready to go.

8. I would add potatoes and garbanzo beans.

And probably marjoram and thyme, or depending on my mood, some ground fennel.
Also, a bit of white wine.

I'd also eliminate the ground beef, but hey, I'm a vegetarian...

9. My Russian grandma made cabbage borscht

My mom watched her make it so she could write down the recipe. (Ground beef, garlic, salt, pepper, chopped cabbage.) She realized that the vinegar, sugar, and tomatoes that went in were the equivalent of ketchup, so that's what she added to it the rest of her life.

12. Made it several times adding almost any kind of veggie

Can't go wrong, but NEVER had used any kind of meat. I'm nowhere near a vegan, just like a vegetable soup without meat. I add some type of beans too, the ham-bone bean mix in a packet you get from your local market is a good addition. Also barley, but add to an already done soup - do not allow it to cook in the broth it will soak up all the liquid and turn the soup starchy.

13. Soups on!

It’s ok ( needs salt, but that can be added at the table). and I have a ton to freeze! Making fresh rolls for the carb.

Thx for all the suggestions.

14. Baked Potato Chowder

Hadn't make this in a while, so made some last week, was so perfect for a cold grey day, Decided to make some more this week. Had Baked Potatoes on Monday, put in a few extra to bake for the chowder. They are standing in the fidge and I will use them for my chowder tomorrow.

This is an easy recipe.
5 or 6 slices bacon
medium onion -chopped
2or 3 stalks celery-chopped
3 tablespoons flour
3 medium baked potatoes, two or 3 days old, peeled and diced
Quart chicken stock
3 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup cream or Mexican crema
Salt and pepper to taste
Shake or two of Worcestershire sauce
few shakes tabasco pepper sauce

Fry bacon until crisp, Drain on paper towel, when cool crumble into small bits. Add onions and celery to bacon drippings and sauté until soft. Stir in flour, let cook a minute or so. Add chicken stock and milk stir to mix, then add potatoes, crumbled bacon, seasonings and let simmer 20 minutes or so. Stir in cream and its ready to serve. Makes 2 quarts; left over chowder freezes well.

If you happen to have an ear of fresh corn, cut corn off cob and sauté the corn along with the chopped onions and celery.
