We were waiting to buy a counter depth refrigerator for years.

They cost more than the standard ones, one of which we bought around 2005. It's the type that juts out and intrudes into the kitchen space. And it is like a cave inside, in which left overs and expired jars get lost. The idea back then was for it to store lots of food for a family of 5. But we would rather shop more now and keep our storage down. We want more control over fresh stuff.

HHGREGG was going out of business in the Richmond area, so we went to a store after they announced, but it just wasn't worth the discount at that time, and though we planned to go back, we forgot.

Just by accident we went back to the store, and found out that they would be gone next Wednesday.

There was hardly anything left in the big store. But my wife saw a boxed refrigerator among the dinged remaining ones, which was a new, perfect color for the kitchen, counter depth, and a GE Profile model.

You can wait for sales at Best Buy and Home Depot, and that is usually the way it works. But we got a $3000 refrigerator for $1200. It is installed, looks perfect, and functions like it should with no dings. It is full of light inside and I am surprised that we fitted almost everything we had in our old one into it. I love it.

But it showed up on the Latest Threads page, and that was my first reaction. Sometimes I amuse myself too much.

2. When we visited Ireland that's the fridge in every kitchen we were in.

The people marketed everyday so the food was fresh.

3. I've had a counter-depth Amana since 1989. Love it, but it's very old and

almond colored. When I bought it, it didn't cost but a hundred dollars more than a regular one.

4. It depends on your needs for sure...

my neighbor cooks a lot and likes to make meals ahead. She hates her counter depth fridge. She was talked into it by her designer when she redid her kitchen. She ended up putting her old fridge in the basement and she uses it as well.

We have one of the big monsters that sticks out and I could care less about how it looks. However, now with the kids gone, and now that we use Blue Apron, we do not need such a big fridge. I feel like the one we have is on it's last legs and could go any day now. We will definitely look for something smaller and more practical.

7. If you are doing a remodel and have the room to spare, you can build the wall ...

... to accommodate a full depth fridge.

This wall was framed 6 inched forward to leave a six inch recess in back. Obviously, you lose a bit of floor space. In this case, the space was not in a traffic pattern or needed.

8. I thought about that, but the final kitchen design did not allow it.

It's a good idea though if you can work it in and need all that extra storage. But like I said, we lost more food than we should have with a deep refrigerator, and we are very happy so far with the new one.

I did get one of those food storage gadgets that suck air out of the bags for freezer storage, for Xmas. We will be getting a separate freezer soon and we'll see how that works. Years ago we had one in a different home and loved it. I haven't decided where to put it yet, but I am looking for unused wall space to tuck it in.
