I have been told it is still a good well.

How can I find out how deep it might be?

1. your city or township should have records. My brother discovered he had a well under his porth

several years after he bought the place. It was an old well--[works well for them--it had been put in place for a pool decades ago] not new like yours looks like by the pic. Anyway. good luck

Or check others in the area. I know in my area neighbors are at about 105 feet plus or minus 10.

3. Suggestions

Check with your area soil and water conservation office and or
your state DNR. Water wells should have been logged.

Google water well companies in your area. Find out if you have a working pump
or if you need a new one.

Do your neighbors have well water and how is it going for them.

Talk to a hydrogeologist (your state DNR or soil and water conservation district might have one)
or a P.E.

check the quality of the water from the well before you invest in bringing the well back on line.


Do not let Timmy fall down the well because then Lassie will have to go find help.

5. I'd tie a large fishing weight on a long string & lower it down a pipe until it hit bottom.

Then pull it up & measure the string. If it's really deep, I'd fold the string in half a couple/few times & then measure it, to make it easier, then multiply accordingly.

7. I did just that today.

It seems to be 100 ft deep, and the water level appears to be about 20 ft.

I'm hoping to get 40 to 75 gallons per day for gardening.

I would prefer to have a solar powered pump.

Any suggestions are welcome.

simple/easy/practical.

So that's the idea,the concept but that pump most likely cannot lift the water 30 feet or so,but there are lots of pumps out there.



Such a pump will run in continuous until the power is cut off. With that method of drawing water you will have some details to work out . Which means you have to think your project through and get creative. You need a pump capable of lifting the water 20/30/40 feet. A veritable speed on the pump motor would be helpful if you can find one that has that option -regulate the flow. With the standard garden house connected into the suction and down into the well and the 2nd. to discharge you can water away. You still have yer details to work out. So, you would or will need to find out the pump capabilities regarding lift. my guess under $200.00 for a basic water transfer pump .










Unless of course you want to spend some real money to bring that well back fully operational.

Lots of pumps to look at. The lift capability is the key.

11. A container for collection water -reduce waste

is a cool concept to yer idea if you go with the pump. Reduce run time on the pump. The idea here is to fill the container with well water.
