These pods are odd looking. Does anyone know what they are?

They were seen while walking through the scrub along the shore in SW Florida.

1. The outside look like Moon Flower seed pods, but those sure aren't Moon Flower seeds.

Those are MUCH smaller.

I never heard of Knicker nut, but since it is a coastal swamp plant that makes sense

but it has the same sounding pain as a cockle burr. I haven't spent much time in swamp land, but I'll bet the flora is wild.
