Question about fava beans

We planted fava beans for the first time year. The plants grew nicely to about 3-4 feet tall and and lots of buds on them. The first few pods we picked were very good. But after that, almost all he other pods were empty. They were as large as the first pods that had beans in them and even had bumps where the beans would be, but hollow inside. What went wrong?

1. (Insert "Silence of the Lambs" reference here)

Thought I'd get that out of the way for you.

Btw, were there any indications that the pods had been opened? Any cracks or holes, no matter how small?

2. No, never had any pest problems in the garden.

I am fortunate to have an army of lizards in my garden to rid it of insects. And my dogs love chasing the lizards. When I let my dogs out, they always ran straight to the fava bean jungle so I know the lizards were active there. It's our own little eco system.

I also grew peas and string beans in the nearby area and no problems with them.
