Related: About this forumI visited Best Friends Animal Sanctuary this week. PICTURE HEAVY
I was mesmerized by this black & white kitty with the heart on his nose:
Horses are wearing fly screens.
This is such an inspiring place. My hubby & I are going to try to go back down and volunteer for a week or two. I love dogs, but decided I would rather work in Cat World or the Parrot Garden.

(7,784 posts)wonderful that you got to visit...your pictures make it look as beautiful as it does in their literature.
Years ago (probably in the 90s) I saw a TV news segment about them and was so impressed with how they care for animals. I remember calling to make a donation (this was before I had a computer, lol) and have been doing so ever since.
I also sell their yearly raffle tickets and always buy a bunch for myself because one of the prizes is a trip to the sanctuary - I still keep my fingers crossed that I'll win that trip some day, I'd love to visit.
Thanks so much for sharing the pictures

(2,948 posts)I too have supported them through donations for years, but this was my first visit.
I live about 260 miles north of the sanctuary, but it seems I was always headed east for my travels.

(18,219 posts)It was not a destination for me. In fact, although I knew about it and had donated to them, I wasn't even aware that I was in the area. I was visiting the national parks in southern Utah and going to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon on that trip. We went right by them and had to make the detour to see them. I wish there were more places this great!

(2,948 posts)then visited Best Friends on our way to Bryce Canyon. All in all, a very fulfilling trip. I had wanted to go to Best Friends for years, so I finally planned a trip in our RV. They have RV parking near the horse pasture for visitors, so it was very convenient for us.

(18,219 posts)I was in awe of southern Utah, with Bryce being my favorite scenery. I want to go back again soon, before I am too old to hike around. You were lucky to go.
And lucky to live so close.

(2,948 posts)We really lucked out. We got to the campground & checked in at 12:33. I had my sister go next door to find us a tour while I helped my husband park in the campsite. By the time we parked, we had 30 minutes before the tour started (1:36). The shuttle picked us up right at the campground and off we went for a 3 1/2 tour of the park. It was the last trip of the day so I was so happy we were able to get on, as it was a completely full bus. Whew!

(9,494 posts)If I could ever retire I would start one up in Bergen County N.J. Our county shelters are no place for animals.

(2,948 posts)The volunteers do a wonderful job of keeping the place clean. The cat house had no smell, and there were probably 20 or more cats.
should be more places like this one!
All of the shelters are a disgrace! Seriously, no animal should ever have to live in such horrible conditions. It just kills me to see them.
When I saw this place on a TV show I thought how beautiful it was and how I wish I had the money to open a place similar to this one.
