taking (formerly) fat cat to the vet this week

she's lost a bit of weight and has become extremely finicky with her food - some days she eats, some days she just licks the gravy off the food, but at least she still eats plenty of the treats. she's drinking a lot of water, peeing a lot and peed on the carpet in front of the husband the other day (there are two boxes that get scooped daily). we're heading out of town in a couple weeks and want to get her checked out before we leave.

previous lab work has pointed to her kidneys, but she won't eat the kidney food and i've just been feeding her what she'll eat since she's so skinny. i know it does no good and it's not her fault, but i'm getting really frustrated with her. this is the first "old" kitty experience i've had, so it's a new world to me. dad's brood are 16 and 17 and unless you see them try to jump, you'd never know it. i just want my old lady to be comfortable and ok.

I worry for her, because I have lived through the same thing, and I hope that she is going to do better than my experience. We went through all the kidney foods, and she would only eat Royal Canin kidney food, but it really was too late by the time we got to that point. I did sub-q fluids, but again, it was too late. She went blind, but was never in pain and got around well. The end came peacefully and she never was in pain, just went downhill fast.

Many people have kitties with kidney problems for years, and I hope that you can be one of them.

she never used to be picky like this. i'm keeping a close eye on her but the nightmare scenario is that something goes wrong while we're gone.

I can only give her a little at a time or she eats it too fast and it comes back up. She's still spry and jumps quite well. She's very small though, has been her whole life. She's only about 6 lbs. I have 5 cats in all and three big dogs. They all hang out together. My vet said that cats sometimes have their metabolisms speed up in old age. That's why I got her some baby cat food. She mostly eats dry Purina Naturals though. The baby cat food is a treat to keep some meat on her bones. I wish you and your kitty the best!

i wonder if the dim one would eat it, she is a picky shit.

fat cat was fat until 18 months or so ago, now she's so skinny that it breaks my heart. the vet said being old is like being pregnant, lots of small serving during the day.

thank you for your good wishes

I was at my wit's end and one poster said that it was the only food that his cat would eat. I found that to be true for me as well. My cat also got so picky, and I don't know why---was it all the different icky foods I tried? Or did food start to taste differently? But by the end, I just let her have whatever she wanted to eat. Your vet can let you know if she is in danger while you are gone.

Travertine had similar problems and it turned out to be diabetes. We are giving him insulin twice a day and he's just about back to his old self. Good Luck! I've enjoyed your posts in the past.

The genetics of type II typically leads to weight gain in adulthood because of all the extra insulin secreted to overcome insulin resistance. When the pancreas gives out in old age, weight loss commonly ensues.

She is suffering.

My late cat Mr. Flame had kidney disease as well. He wouldn't eat that food either.

At the end of his life he was in sad shape. He was a huge cat but had dropped to 12 lbs. by the time I had to have him put down.

The pictures posted of her sure show her age no doubt.

You can get sucked for lots of $$$ on this sort of a DX.

If you believe the cat is suffering, well ... you need to make a decision is my advice.

In any event, I wish you and you old kitty lots of

it's one of her favorite spots.

she gets around, she still plays sometimes and she is eating up her second meal of the day. she still has a good quality of life and i am hoping that decision has to be made later rather than sooner. we'll see what the vet says and go from there.

But I do know that feeling of a pet growing old and having health problems. You're such a great kitty parent, and formally known as Fat Cat is so very lucky to have you.
