Feeding a diabetic dog

My dog has diabetes and the vet recommended we feed her one of the prescription diet dog foods for glucose management. The problem is that my dog is allergic to corn. Every time I've had her on a food that contains corn, she shakes her head and scratches at her ears and lays on her back on the concrete and wiggles to scratch her back. It's happened so many times I'm fairly certain it's the corn. When I put her on food with no corn these symptoms disappear.

I have not been able to find a glucose management food that doesn't contain corn. I've been told that some regular dog food might work for her if they're higher protein or fiber but I am uncertain about what she should have. Does anyone know of any kind I could try? If you have a diabetic dog and don't use the prescription food, what do you feed it?

2. Grain free Wellness?

I have a diabetic cat and know Wellness for cats is free of grain and corn. I suggest you check out Wellness for dogs and read its ingredient list.

My experience with cat food is that high-quality canned food often has better ingredients than the so-called prescription diet foods.

8. I've heard of Wellness.

The vet said we should feed her dry food but I bet they make a dry food. I'll check them out. Thanks for the idea.

3. I had to feed a diabetic, blind & deaf dog a few years ago.

The poor little Shi Tzu was my mother in law's dog. My mother in law had stage 4 lung cancer and was in the hospital. I didn't buy the food, but I'm pretty sure it was from Science Diet. The poor little dog was allergic to everything it seemed. I would feed her twice a day and give her the insulin shot too. She did really well on it and lived to the ripe old age of 15. I wish I could remember the exact food we used, but it's been about 5 years since she passed on. Anyway, here's a link to the food that I think it probably was:

It drives her crazy. There's something in it that makes her itchy.

That was sweet of you to take care of the poor little sweetie. It's pretty demanding with the scheduled feelings and injections.

1-yahoo groups-pet diabetes.com seems large & active. You will have to join first. When my first dog started having seizures, I found & used several canine epilepsy & canine raw food diet groups there that I believe kept Angel Alex alive for several years. I hope this helps
