Related: About this forumThe other day, before the snake bite, I was about to update...
Overall the pups have been great. Playful, mischief, growing like you would not believe. 26 and 25 pounds already!
Two nights ago, they ate dinner as usual and went outside to pee. They were out about 5 minutes and we had been on the porch waiting for them to do their business. Then we all went back in the house and the usual night is them settling down for a nap. Sam was particularly quiet, not panting or playing. He just looked out of sorts and even though he got on his pillow, he wouldn't lie down. We each tried petting him but he just looked at us. Finally my husband noticed a marble sized bump on his jaw. I thought maybe a wasp got him or he had eaten a bee (they bite at the bees on the clover for some reason). When the swelling got bigger, I said let's go.
Took him to the hospital and right as we walked in, the tech said "Oh, another snake bite."
Apparently they see this at least once a day this time of the year.
They kept him overnight and he was fine the next day except for some swelling and lethargy. We were told to keep the pups separated so that she wouldn't hurt the puncture wounds. HA! So much for that. We're doing what we can but they seem to be back to their old selves again.
Other than that exciting evening, pups are doing well!

(16,330 posts)we've got the yard really trimmed back but we live next to some woods. Copperheads are common but we usually just leave them alone.
Knowing Sam, he thought this was a toy to be played with.

(2,910 posts)I have been looking into a rattlesnake bite vaccine. From what I have read, it looks like a good idea.
I'm glad your pup is ok.

(16,330 posts)now that I am talking to the neighbors about this, people keep telling me about all the other people who had their dogs get bit.
I guess anywhere there's grass and shrubs, there can be snakes. Wonder why we have moles?
