How did a sedative used in euthanasia end up in cans of a premium brand beef dog food? The company behind the food, Evangers, would really like to know. So would the owner of four pugs that became sick and one that died after eating cans of Evangers Hunk of Beef.
Sodium pentobarbital is a sedative and sometimes used to control seizures and for insomnia in humans, but its most commonly used for euthanasia in cats, dogs, and horses, as well as other farm and companion animals that arent going to be eaten. Its also used for human euthanasia in localities where thats legal, and has been used for executions by lethal injection.
Because sodium pentobarbital is not intended for use in livestock that will eventually be consumed, everyone wants to know how it ended up in these cans of dog food. Evangers says it is investigating, but currently believes its beef supplier is the likely source.

(12,145 posts)Mr. froggy and I got stuck in a traffic jam behind a rendering truck once, and we both got sick from the stench. It was vile. The truck was full of rotting dead animals to be "purified" with peroxide spray and chopped up and cooked for dog food. That's what the drivers told us.
Maybe mixed in with the dead cows, Evangers got some euthanized dogs from a vet clinic, and that's how the drug got into their dog food.

(50,453 posts)Which would explain where the pentobarbital came from, whether they use dog and cat meat - there's a good chance they do - or not.

(127 posts)to hear of others whose dogs became ill after eating that food. Evanger's has been in business for 82 years and never had a recall. I find it odd that there are no other reports of illness from this. It will be interesting to see what the investigation reveals.
