Sandy

Here's a transcription of a strange letter I found among my dad's papers. I must have been around five when I wrote it, which would have been in the late 1940s. We lived in Japan, where Dad was stationed in the U.S. Army. He was set to retire and was checking out a civilian job in the States. Veronica in the letter was my older sister.

Dear, Dad, Sandy got a leg broke by a 10ton truck and the dog doctor said here give him these pills and some butter. It was broke too much and sandy is an anjel now but he was alseep when he turned in to it and does not no it and runs to me and liks my face when I cry so I will stop. and I kiss him back and kiss him back. Veronica doesnot kiss him and only cries and said stop playing like he is harvey the invisibel rabbit but im' not becuase Sandy is a gohst or an anjel.

I went out of my way to avoid using the "d" word, didn't I?

I remember Sandy fondly and how sad I was when he died, but I don't remember writing the letter. If Sandy's "anjel" consoled me when he died, the memory must be mixed in with all the memories I have of him consoling me over this and that when he was alive. Dear Sandy, you precious little mongrel, how I still love you.
