Just returned from the vet.
We had to say goodbye to our 8 year old dog. I am feeling dead inside. He had surgery last week for an unrelated issue, and the vets discovered necrotizing hepatitis.
I am devastated.

Losing a beloved furkid is so very heartbreaking.
I have been there and it never gets any easier - and that he was only 8 and that this was so unexpected has got to be devastating... I don't know what else to say except that I can feel your pain and empathize. I lost my dog in 2007 and it still hurts. I had two dogs and still have the younger one, but the dog I lost was the one I was closest to and I still miss him all the time. It's good you're talking about it with those who understand and time will help, but I know how shocked and helpless you must feel right now. Be easy on yourself and try to remember how fortunate he was to have you. 
Of course there was nothing you could have done. He sounds like he was much loved. RIP and best to you and your family.
Few human beings give of themselves to another as a dog gives of itself. I've found myself mourning more for my lost pets, and I've had many in my 72 years, than for the humans I have lost. My pets have always been by my side ~ not judging ~ just being. 
What a shock. They are family, sometimes closer than family. Please accept my deepest condolences.
except to say how sorry I am. Losing this quality of love is heartbreaking.
After the grieving, I hope that you can let a rescue into your life.
and not two weeks from now, when I'll be abroad.
He was a sweet little boy who loved everyone. My chihuahua is in shock, having lost his two big brothers in less than a year.
Please, if your dog is on phenobarbital, make sure to get its liver checked regularly. The vet thinks Tito's medicine contributed to the serious liver issues.
