I need to stock up on Benadryl...

last year a snake bite. Last Sunday, I don't know what they got into.

Lila came to the door with her mouth all swollen with drool coming out both sides. She yelped when I wiped off her face but I never saw any wounds. Called the vet (of course this was Sunday and had to leave a message.) She's big enough now that she could handle a snake bite but I was told to give Benadryl and watch. I had to borrow this from my neighbor because I didn't have any.

I never saw any swelling near the neck and she basically kept to herself for a few hours. Her face looked better after a while and she was fine by Monday morning.

Maybe a sting? She let me poke around her gums but I still haven't seen anything.

It's like having toddlers!

I've been reading about snake bites on our neighborhood newsletter. Happening quite a lot right about now. And there's not much you can do if you have plants or even a grill (they like to get under your grill cover). People are all freaked out and have been discussing deterrents but those don't really work. With big dogs, they can handle a bite but you watch to make sure their throats aren't constricted. Not as easy for the little dogs.

My dogs dig and snoop so they might encounter a snake. I've been told the snakes will move away if they can but will give a warning strike if the dog gets too close.

I'm not overly scared of the idea of snakes in my yard. I used to see them all the time when I mowed. But I don't really want to KNOW they are there.

I don't like the sound of anything scurrying when I walking past. I certainly don't want to hear a rattle!

that night our labs came running into the house. One was drooling and his whole head was swelling! Of course it was a Saturday night at 10:30 pm. We went to the emergency vet and while waiting Ranger looked better. The first question the vet asked was if we recently had a pile of wood delivered! He said it was probably a brown recluse bite. I don't remember if we gave Ranger anything for it.

there's all kinds of stuff they can get into. I don't know if we have brown recluse in Georgia and I hope to never see one!

We got rattlers fairly often. I usually picked them up with a rake, put them in a bucket with a lid, and transported them to the back side of our property (40 acres). After I lost one of my mini-dachshund to one, I started getting my dogs venom vaccinations. Don't know if they have that for copperheads. Back in KY, we have those, but we're not around water.

I vote for spider bite.

for some reason I thought snakes or ants but it's highly possible it was a spider.

and the vet told her for every 100 dogs brought in for snake bites , she would treat 1 cat. Dogs, apparently, have a thing about going after snakes while a cat is more cautious - maybe quicker?
