(5,324 posts)That's what turns me off about Geico they resort to abusing statistics in order to deliver a misleading message.
It would be different if they claimed that "those who compared us with their current insurance companies found that they could save an average of XX%", but that's not what they say. What they say is "Those WHO SWITCHED saved an average of XX%."
In fact, ANY of the major insurance companies can truthfully make that same claim, since they're only talking about those who switched, and virtually ANYONE who switches will do so to save money. Why else would someone switch? The average percentage saved will be different between companies, but that's a complex function of not only the average difference between rates, but also the standard deviation of the differences between rates. In short, it's a useless statistic, especially without access to similar statistics from competing insurance companies.
So think about this: Do you really believe Geico insurance can be assumed to be a better deal, considering all of that money they put into their admittedly entertaining but probably very expensive advertising?
Here's a good article on the same subject that I found after composing this post.
