Dr. G. and the dog...
Dr. G: Medical Examiner is on reruns on some obscure cable channels, and Quincy she ain't. Or maybe she is.
I caught a recent one where some guy was found dead with dog bites on his neck and scratching all over his body-- sure looked like an attack by his pet German shepherd. Analyzing the wounds, though, they looked postmortem.
And, he's a serious alcoholic, trying to dry out but the DT's get him every time. EMT's found two empty vodka bottles by his bed, and his blood alcohol to be .50. Not a typo-- .5 which is enough to kill most of us by itself. But, it started to look like a homicide when they found out about a big fight he had with a neighbor. His heart was damaged, like about all of his internal organs, but a heart attack wasn't obvious.
Digging around in there, she found that he had swallowed his false teeth, and they lodged in his windpipe. With him so drunk he no longer had any gag reflex, he choked and his heart ended up stopping.
Now, here's the point of this sordid tale-- his dog, far from being an attacker, seems to have been trying to revive him. Wake him up. The throat damage? The dog vaguely understood that the problem was there and did what he could to try to help.
Nothing was said about the fate of the dog, but mention was made about how the neighborhood considered him a bit of a hero.
You all know of that mysterious bond we have with our cats and dogs. It gets stronger every day, even as it gets more mysterious.
