Back to the vet we go...

I think Sam has allergies. A while back, he began to rub one eye. It got all red and he kept it shut and rubbed it all the time. Took him to the vet and wondered if it might be the thing where the eyelashes roll in. But odd that it was just one eye. (One of our previous dogs had surgery for that a long time ago.) It did not appear to be a scratch on the eye.

We put drops in the eye and it cleared up but he still rubbed from time to time. Now he's rubbing both eyes. And he squints a lot. And the area around the eye is getting rough.

Of course, I googled. And I see that paw licking can be a symptom and he does that. He gets plenty of exercise so it's not boredom licking. We thought he just liked to clean his feet.

He's already on a grain free diet and he doesn't scoot his butt or anything so I don't think it's a food allergy.

The dogs are about 2 years old now and huge. I think he's up to 115 but I'll find out tomorrow. (He's a rott mix.)

Thought/experience on dogs with allergies?

What trees & grasses are in bloom by you? There must be an allergy map online

Forgot, I had to wash off Alex The Wonder Dogs paws. Dip in dishpan of warm water, wipe, shake out rug 3x a day, no shoes in the house ever.

and my eyes have been killing me too. Looks like oak, pine and mulberry are culprits. Grass and weeds are in the moderate range. Weather.com shows very high tonight, and then high and very high over the next few days.

We wipe their feet but I think the foot bath is a better idea. Thanks.

Washing her face with warm water (no soap, just water) a few times a day helped, also washing her bed more often.

But just washing her face made some difference. And she didn't mind it at all.

I left some clothes in the dryer!

I do need to be better about washing the bedding. I'm going to look for some unscented detergent and the kind without dyes and such.

So he's very used to having his face/beard washed.

Have you tried just basic Dawn dish soap to wash his face?

Remember - that's what is used by animal rescues/birds caught in oil spills and such.

It's what our vet recommended out of the gate. About a week ago we had to start twice a day face washing. Also swab your guys ears if he will tolerate it. Ruckus has season allergies - and that twice a day helps him manage the pollen.

Oh - and try and slicker his face first to loosen up the pollen.

willing to try anything to help the poor bear. Bathing all over is a chore but it's warm enough to do outside now. He's pretty good about ear cleaning so I can keep up with that. Thanks.

See how that works.

Another trick from the 'white dog tear stain removal' crowd?

Saline solution around the eyes. Just the cheapest store brand you can find - nothing special needed.

I'm really really into my Maltese!

ash, & cedar, but fall pollens don't bother her hardly at all. She's on allergy meds now and today it's in the "very high" category. Poor kiddo. I hope the vet finds out what's causing Sam's discomfort.

I had a white poodle who was allergic to almost everything, but most of all to oak pollen. We live under 6 HUGE oak trees.
We had her tested and she had to go on a special homemade diet of oatmeal and chicken and had to get special shots every 3 months. All in all, it cost over $1500. She was our problem child. In her lifetime, we spent over $10K on her vet bills. Yes, we loved her.
Having said all that, I bet your baby just has seasonal allergies that can be easily diagnosed and "fixed". Don't tell him I used that word.
Good luck at the Dr.s office.

he's been fixed. And he hardly knew it! Ha!

He's had his share of vet stuff though including a snake bite. I was wondering if they would recommend allergy testing but I'm hoping we just start with some drops and all the advice given like washing etc.

He's on a prescription food and has been on benedryl since he was a puppy. That helps for the most part. But this time of year his allergies can be worse.

Lots of chemicals in all the various stuff we use to clean floors. remove stains or freshen carpeting, air fresheners, sanitizing and cleaning sprays, and the proprietary cleaners that goes in brands like Swiffer. Even if you spray some cleaner on the countertop the mist always drifts down to the floor. Pets come into contact with all these products on their paws just walking around. Their faces are close to floor so they get the effects of the fumes and the chemical stuff can stick on the fur and skin of their faces if they lay down.

This might not be a problem for most pets, but if you have one that is sensitive then maybe it's worth looking into.

It flares up every few days year round and we have to put an ointment in his eye. Vet says he has it for the rest of his life.

Don't know if your dog has it. You might want to have that checked.

There is a pill called Apoquel that did wonders for him. It has been around for quite a while, but the manufacturer grossly underestimated the demand so it wasn't readily available. We had to wait for almost a year on a 'waiting list' before we could get it, but the results were great! Ask your vet about trying it if you suspect allergies. It should run you about $40/mo for the pills. The pills come in three weight classes, but interestingly all of the sizes cost the same. Our Bennie only need the medium size, but our vet suggested we get the large size and cut the pills in half, since both the medium and the large sizes were the same $40/mo. Good Luck!!
