New York trying to ban "pet leasing"...

Pet leasing has been drawing scrutiny from lawmakers and animal welfare groups since media reports last year highlighted consumer complaints against Reno, Nevada-based Wags Lending, which pioneered the practice. Nevada and California have now outlawed pet leasing, and New York lawmakers are proposing legislation prohibiting lease contracts "where dogs or cats are used as collateral."

I'm not thrilled with the idea of designer dogs in the first place, but if you have to have one for some reason, wait till you have the money. The thought of "leasing" it creeps me out.

(Besides, I've always thought shelters are the best choice for getting pets.)

I've always had rescues and now who is my soulmate. I have also wanted a Yorkie all of my life and still want one, but I have so much guilt about seeking out and paying for a pedigreed dog when there are so many homeless and needy dogs. I'm getting to the age where my next dog(s) will probably be my last. I am struggling with the decision. One possible solution is to rescue two dogs for every pedigreed pup, but that brings it to three dogs! That's a lot. I want to have the resources to give them the best possible care.

2. There are also rescue groups for various breeds - and also Petfinder, where you can specify a breed

My last two dogs have been purebred Brussels Griffons, just happened to hear about both of them from people I got to know in rescue - and I'd never even heard of the breed previously! My first pup was age 9, his owner had died and he was in a desperate situation. No questions asked, I agreed to take him, and we bonded that very first day. And the dog I have now was a pet shop rescue at 5 months, a vet tech who had worked for my vet was helping to foster him and knew my other dog so she contacted me. There are all kinds of dogs in rescue who need homes - and I have two friends who adopted Yorkies from rescue.

Petfinder is a great resource, but I also learned that there are rescue groups for every breed - and they're on the internet. As I said, I have two friends with Yorkies and they're both rescue dogs - and as cute as can be! I wish I could still access Photobucket, since I have pix of Lily, one friend's pup. When you're ready, check out the links. And I've been lucky, my guys found me - and I've never been disappointed.

4. Well, if you makes you feel any particular way, for my part, I always thought 3 was a perfect # ...

That way, when you lose 1 which will unfortunately inevitably happen, there's always still 2 that have one another.

1 is a decent number but then that pet is likely to feel lonely a lot of the time but at least they won't suddenly lose their 1 companion ... if you have only 2. Which is one of the saddest things ever to witness.

'We' used to have the perfect # of pets until my soon-to-be ex recently left w/'her' two dogs, leaving my old kitteh who spent the large majority of his life w/these two doggies feeling pretty obviously lonely the past few months. Used to be he had CONSTANT company (esp. since my 'wife' worked from home) ... but now I leave for 8+ hrs a day for work and he's suddenly all alone a big part of the day after 10 years where he's almost never alone ... and it's pretty clear it's bumming him out. He walks around crying looking for his buddies still.

Anyways ... 3 is an optimal count of pets in my book ... so go for it!

We had two kitty boys that grew up together. After one died at age 14, the other would go around to all his brother's hiding places looking for him. It was so sad. But I was home all day so he did have some company.

Have you thought of going to your shelter to see if they have an older cat as a companion for yours?

adding to my pet population at the present time. Though I do wish I could, it just wouldn't be best.

About the best I can hope for is a reconciliation to the point that 'the boys' (i.e. doggie brothers) spend some time here at the house (which believe me is only 'mine' because I bought it on my own) from time to time, but ATM, we've not seen each other nor spoken by voice (only e-talk) since she left. I'm 'respecting her decision' you might call it, hoping she will break the proverbial ice, and we can be friends again as we were for quite some time before our romantic relationship but I guess we'll see. Nothing would make me happier than seeing my kitteh nuzzling his big ol' doggie buddies like he used to ... ANYWAYS ...

Having 1 or 3(+) I think is better than having 2 for the reason you mentioned. Having exactly 2 puts you and your pet in a position that can be SO heartbreaking, and 1 is really not all that optimal either, though if it's ALWAYS 1 then that can work out pretty okay cause the pet gets used to being a solo critter in the household.

I'd never heard of this practice before and it deserves to be shut down! It's abusive to the puppies and heartbreaking - and financially draining - for those who "lease" them...

Please don't repo Fido: Lawmakers look to ban pet leasing

ALBANY — How much is that maltipoo in the window? It could end up costing twice what it says on the price tag if the buyer is enticed into signing a pet leasing contract.

That's what nearly happened to 24-year-old Natalie Sullivan, of Brooklyn. She and her roommate, she said, fell in love with a designer Frenchton puppy at a pet store but couldn't afford the $1,350 price tag.

"So the salesman talked us into this predatory payment plan," Sullivan said.

It wasn't until they got home with their adorable French bulldog-Boston terrier mix that they read the contract more closely. Little Jane wouldn't actually be theirs for two years, after they'd forked over monthly payments totaling nearly $3,000 plus a balloon payment of $275. If they failed to pay, it appeared, the lease company could repossess their bat-eared baby as if she were a car.

"It's a heinous thing," said Libby Post, executive director of the New York State Animal Protection Federation, which is lobbying for a ban on pet leasing. "This kind of predatory lending should not involve a living, breathing being."
