Woman charged with felony after dog dies in hot car at Trussville Walmart

Formal charges have been filed against a woman whose dog died after being left in a hot, locked car for about eight hours on Wednesday outside Trussville's Walmart.

Trussville police identified the woman as 34-year-old Stephanie Shae Thomas of Trussville. She is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, which is a felony. She has previously been convicted - in 2005 - of felony theft of property.

Lt. Phil Dillon said Thomas went to the Trussville Police Department the day after the dog died and confessed to leaving the dog in her vehicle while she went inside Walmart to shop. "She stated that she never went outside the store to check on the dog and that she lost track of time while she was shopping,'' Dillon said.

Officers responded to the shopping center parking lot at 11 a.m. Wednesday after shoppers spotted the dog suffering in the back of the Mercedes sedan.

Facebook Live video shows a concerned crowd gathered around the car, which was in the front of the parking lot next to the handicap spots. At least one man tried to get the door open but was unsuccessful.

I wish they had shattered every window of her car though, they saw it suffering. Poor dog. She looks like some kind of Meth user, oughta be used to jail.

I am glad she is getting charged. She should also be forbidden from owning animals. If she has any others they should be taken away.

at an agility trial with her Aussie in it. We quickly called a locksmith and was able to get some water to the dog through a partially open window. I paid for the locksmith (the young woman paid me back later) who came quickly. We would not have hesitated to break the window if we thought the dog was in any danger.

We also had a crowd of very concerned dog owners around the dog.
