I had a Scottie who would intervene in any spat among our cats. She would move her blocky body between the two combatants to break their concentration.

It's no accident that another dog was in the vicinity. Dogs break up cat fights because by discouraging fighting as a way of pack life, it discourages dog fights, too -- especially good news for the leader of the pack.
